- By focusing on particular elements of accessibility, it can seem accessibility is associated with a fix. Add captions, fix alt text, or make a quiz keyboard friendly. Universal Design for Learning, or UDL, flips that timeline. Instead of retrofitting to remove barriers after they appear, UDL asks what if we designed courses so those barriers never show up in the first place? UDL is a framework for building learning environments that are flexible, inclusive, and ready for the full range of learners from day one. At its core, UDL rests on three principles, each one focused on a key part of the learning experience. These are engagement, representation, and expression. Engagement focuses on how we can motivate learners. Not every learner connects with material the same way. Some learners thrive with choice, others desire consistency.
