- [Instructor] We often need to gather data about a large number of people, objects, or events. In those cases, we might conduct a survey or perform direct observation, but the challenge is, that there are simply too many people to survey or too many objects to observe. For example, imagine that we want to know the opinion of the American public about our company's brand image. We could easily design a survey that would gather those opinions, but there are more than 250 million adults living in the United States. We can't possibly send all of them a survey. Sampling is a technique that addresses this issue. When we use sampling, we choose a small subset or a sample of a large population and then use that sample for our surveys or observations. If we wanted to do our brand survey, we could choose a sample of people and ask them the questions on the survey.
