- [Instructor] While most of the data that we store in databases is in text or numeric form, we often have to work with multimedia data as well. Databases provide special binary formats that allow us to store multimedia data, such as images, audio, and video. People around the world armed with smartphones now take more than 1 trillion photographs every year. Some of those photographs make their way into databases where they must be converted into ones and zeros for storage in binary form. Fortunately, image formats like gif, jpeg and PNG, take care of that formatting for us. Image data is useful in many industries. Doctors, dentists, and other healthcare professionals rely upon images to provide accurate diagnoses of their patients. Insurance companies store images of the damage from car accidents, natural disasters, and other claim events to assist in the processing of claims and possible lawsuits.
