- Constructive conflict, how to stretch thinking. It might come as a surprise, but conflict and challenge are essential to having a collectively intelligent team. Research has shown that if a group has two people in it who really disagree on the way forward, the results of that group's work are likely to be more successful. It's one of the reasons why diversity is so important, whether it's diversity of gender or religion or ethnicity or background. The less like we are to each other, the more likely we are to challenge each other's assumptions, and that makes decisions more successful because they stand up to those challenges or they're changed because of the challenge. If all we do is agree with each other, the solutions that we create are possibly bland or generic or average. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that we shouldn't be polite with each other. We should always be respectful to collaborate well, but we can challenge each other or be in conflict about the ideas…
