Release models and support

- [instructor] Updating the software on our system and the operating system itself are important, both for security reasons and so we can enjoy new features when they become available. In order to distribute software, distribution maintainers release new and updated software packages into package repositories, which are large online libraries of software available to install in a given distribution to make them available for end users. And releasing packages in this way, can follow one of two patterns, these define the release strategy of a distribution. Some Linux distributions use a rolling release model, meaning that when a new package is available, whether it's fixing a spelling error in the help file for a game, or a brand new version of the Linux kernel, it becomes available in the repositories for users to download when they run their software upgrade process.
