- So the world of HIPAA compliance has a lot of specific terms and acronyms, including some I've used already. Let's take some time to break them down and simplify them. First, let's start with protected health information, or PHI. PHI is any information that is related to medical records and can be used to identify a person. You're probably thinking this could be something as simple as your name. While that is true, keep in mind it needs to be coupled with medical information such as a diagnosis, insurance information, or lab results. Sometimes you may hear electronic protected health information, or ePHI, which is just digital PHI, versus a physical record. Note, some folks may think the P in PHI stands for personal, but remember, we need to protect it. Next up is a covered entity.
