- Fundamentally AppSec is the practice of building, operating, and maintaining secure software. AppSec professionals strive to ensure that applications are resilient to malicious attack and prevent bad actors from misusing or abusing the software. They have always used automation to improve their security testing techniques, and artificial intelligence is a natural extension of this evolving automation. In a blog post from 2017, Jacob Hansen wrote, "Overall, the application security industry has undergone three major developments. First, we saw the formation of the industry in the 1990s. This era was driven by people and the birth of organizations, dedicated to application security.
