PCRF in LTE: Policy and charging rules function

PCRF, which is Policy Charging and Rule Function, is responsible for managing some key tasks. How much data a user can consume, that is being decided by the PCRF, or what quality of service to be delivered to a particular user, again, PCRF decides that, or what charging rules should be applied. Basically, the PCRF is the brain behind personalized service delivery and billing. PCRF works in conjunction with the PGW, which is Packet Data Network Gateway, and enforce the relevant policies. It govern that how the traffic is being treated. There are the certain excess restrictions to be applied to certain users depending upon the policies that are defined in PCRF for different users, that will be done here by the PCRF. It is also taking care of the charging rules, decide when to charge, how much to charge, depending upon what kind of data consumption there is, what time of the day the particular user is consuming their data.
