I had the pleasure of meeting Jon McNeill and discussing his approach to operational improvement through what he calls a simple but powerful algorithm: keep asking “Why?” What stood out most was how many organizations carry processes that exist simply because “that’s how it’s always been done.” By repeatedly asking why, Jon has helped companies uncover unnecessary complexity, eliminate wasted steps, and dramatically shorten operational cycles. Sometimes innovation isn’t about adding more technology or layers it’s about challenging assumptions and simplifying what already exists. A great reminder that curiosity and critical thinking can be some of the most powerful tools in leadership and operational excellence.

The AI Satire - A fictionalized, self-aware take on enterprise AI adoption. Humor intended.😃 ********************************************** A Very Typical AI Success (read Failure) Story ********************************************** Last year, an enterprise announced it was “going all-in on AI.” That phrase tested extremely well. No one asked what it meant. An enterprise AI platform was purchased. $28 per user per month. 7,500 users. A number large enough to feel strategic. It was labeled a “foundational capability.” Foundations are important. They don’t require explanations. The steering committee approved it immediately. Someone asked about use cases. The answer was: “We’ll discover those organically.” Organic means after the contract is signed. The promise was “step-change productivity.” That’s just 10x in a blazer. HR asked how productivity would be measured. The response: “Outcome-based KPIs.” Everyone nodded. Three months later, adoption was reviewed. Daily active users: 0.6%. One person used it heavily. He was generating resignation letters. The rollout was labeled a “measured success.” Measured means nothing caught fire. The CFO asked about ROI. A slide appeared with a heat map. Red. Yellow. Green. Green was good. The data source: “internal assessment.” Momentum was declared strong. Momentum is ROI without numbers. An engineer asked why the AI couldn’t access real data. The answer: “Data readiness is a journey.” Journeys don’t have deadlines. Marketing requested a quote. The response: “We’re embedding AI into the DNA of the organization.” No one knows where the DNA is. But it sounds deep. The vendor requested a success story. The number shared: “25,000 hours saved annually.” Calculated using headcount and optimism. It was published. It always is. The organization became a “featured AI leader.” The CEO reposted it on LinkedIn. The licenses renewed next quarter. Actual usage: about 3%. An expansion was proposed. Because “scale drives value.” And unused licenses look bad in spreadsheets. This time, the focus would be adoption. Adoption means training. Training means a recording. No one will watch it. But attendance will be 98%. Attendance is success. Success becomes a dashboard. Dashboards become strategy. And in enterprise transformation, the narrative becomes the product. As long as the slide goes up and to the right. ********************************************* Now your take .. Which part felt uncomfortably familiar?” “What line made you laugh… and then pause?” Satire aside — where does AI adoption usually break first?”
