🚀 Driving Innovation & Saving Money at TxDOT: Digital Phone Transformation in Full Gear! 📞    Excited to report that over the past year, TxDOT’s Information Technology Division (ITD), Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Team has been hard at work validating desk phones and Cisco Jabber accounts statewide in preparation for a major upgrade to our new call manager system. With over 209 of 340 sites already migrated, we’ve achieved a 44% reduction in the number of jabber accounts and desktop phones, thereby streamlining support and reducing monthly costs. 💡📉    But we didn’t stop there. Who remembers Doc Brown in 𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦, waving his arms around and declaring that the “flux capacitor” made time travel possible? That’s how many in tech view the mainframe: a mythical box where you send data, mysterious forces swirl, and results magically appear. But they are wrong - the mainframe is just a huge, scalable, very secure server. Yes, it runs a different operating system: not Linux, not MacOS, not Windows, but z/OS. Yes, its file system is quirky: with uppercase names, and hierarchies defined with “.”’s instead of “/”’s. The language of choice? COBOL. Which is verbose and readable. If you can read any programming language, I promise you can read COBOL. The mainframe is not the "flux capacitor" - it’s just another computing platform—different, yes, but approachable. Early in my career, I met a few COBOL developers who came out of retirement in the run-up to January 2000, getting paid $300+ per hour to remediate Y2K bugs when nobody else was left who knew COBOL. Suspect a similar trajectory for highly-skilled, well-rounded "pre-AI" engineers
