I’ve come to believe that early experiences carry disproportionate weight - far more than we often acknowledge. For designers and builders, “minimum viable” may suffice for validating core functionality, but it rarely earns trust or sparks genuine delight. While velocity matters, I’ve always struggled with the notion that early versions should be merely viable, especially in a world where attention is scarce and emotional resonance is everything. This extends beyond product. Do you show up as the minimum viable version of yourself in your work, your relationships, your craft? I would encourage you to challenge the conventional MVP framework. Replace it with the Minimum Awesome Product. This doesn’t mean it’s fully-featured or pixel perfect. But it should be worthy of attention. Memorable, even evocative in the way it triggered emotion. The kind of product that prompts someone to say, “I didn’t know I needed this, but now I can’t live without it.” You can refine mechanics over time, but the emotional experience of a first interaction is singular and unrecoverable. Don’t settle for viability. Build something worth remembering… and make it awesome! ❤️‍🔥

Building a startup is hard. It is especially hard in a country like Nigeria, where the ecosystem is yet to mature, and there are still many challenges to navigate. It is confusing, lonely, and full of uncertain decisions. Founders, especially early-stage founders, need as much support as they can get. Not “inspire to perspire” posts, but practical support on hiring, operations, funding, customer research, and navigating the regulatory landscape. Too many founders are surrounded by noise, surface-level advice, and generic content that does not reflect their current realities. What they need is a community that understands exactly what they are going through and can offer context that is immediately useful. Sierra Collective exists to be that community. Don't Build a Better Wheat Farm" - Why Defensibility Stakes Are Higher in Deep Tech Just published a new piece on my "Ignore the Confusion" blog, building on thoughtful insights from Eric Ver Ploeg at Tunitas Ventures about startup defensibility. Eric's core thesis: Too many startups pitch like wheat farmers - "huge TAM, slow incumbents, growing market, domain expertise" - but fail to think through long-term defensibility until it's too late. From a deep tech perspective, the stakes are even higher: ** Unlike software, deep tech founders must commit to defensibility strategies from day one - their funding depends on it ** Patent vs. trade secret decisions are often difficult to reverse and shape your entire competitive strategy ** Even "picks and shovels" providers (the tools that make industries more efficient) become commodities without proper moats The key insight that resonates: Defensibility can't be retrofitted. Whether you're building software or deep tech, your moat must be architected into the business model from the start. Anthropic just shipped file-system agents to consumers. The architecture matters more than the feature! Cowork takes Claude Code's autonomous capabilities and removes the CLI barrier - now anyone on macOS can point Claude at a folder and let it execute multi-step workflows. Organize files, process data, create documents. The AI plans and executes independently. Why the technical approach matters Most AI tools operate in browser sandboxes. Cowork works at the OS level - executing file operations autonomously, not just suggesting edits. That's a fundamentally different execution model. Anthropic built this in ~1.5 weeks using Claude Code itself. When AI can scaffold its own tooling, development velocity changes completely. What this signals strategically The AI productivity market is bifurcating: 1. Chat-based tools scale horizontally (more users, more conversations, commoditizing) 2. Agentic tools scale vertically (fewer users, higher value, defensible if you solve for trust) Anthropic's $100-200/month pricing reflects this - they're positioning Cowork as workflow infrastructure, not consumer SaaS. The constraint is trust, not capability Claude can delete files and execute arbitrary operations. That's why this is a controlled research preview. The technical primitive works - the challenge is building trust infrastructure to scale it. Audit logs, rollback mechanisms, granular permissions - these are requirements, not nice-to-haves. Why OS-level access is the real trend Browser AI is limited by web security models. It can't access local files, email databases, or coordinate between applications without manual intervention. You feed it context, then manually move its output somewhere useful. OS-level AI sees your complete working context and executes full workflows autonomously. Pull data from email, update a spreadsheet, draft a report, sync to cloud - without human intervention between steps. Most valuable work happens between applications. Browser AI lives in one tab. System-level AI orchestrates across your entire computing environment. This is why the trend isn't just "better AI" - it's where AI runs. Browser tools compete on inference quality and UI (commoditizing fast). OS-level tools compete on integration depth and trust infrastructure (defensible, takes years to build). Where this leads If file-system agents prove out, next is inter-application orchestration. Today Cowork organizes folders. Tomorrow it coordinates across your file system, calendar, email and task manager. The highest-leverage AI applications won't live in browsers - they will live in your system with administrator-level permissions. Cowork isn't just a productivity feature. 87% of YC companies are enterprise. Now it makes complete sense that AI is starting in enterprise. The models are expensive to run, and enterprise lets you automate workflows and vertically integrate. But to reach billions of people in their daily lives. The real prize is still consumer. A lot of founders are scared of consumer right now. At any point, OpenAI or Google can vertically integrate and kill your company. But you can make a similar argument for enterprise applications. The other part is that consumer is genuinely hard. Distribution is more mature, the App Store feels saturated, and there aren’t obvious new channels. At the same time, we are in the midst of a revolution. Interfacing with the world will be more than just a handful of chatbots. If you pay attention to daily life, to your parents, your kids, anyone close to you, you’ll notice how many small, annoying things still exist. Yes, the App Store is mature. But the top apps right now are AI apps. If something is truly great, innovative, or fun, people will go out of their way to find it. Menlo Ventures analyzed routine tasks of US adults. The Takeaway: Fewer than one in five people actually use AI for their day-to-day tasks. Most people stick with whatever system they already have, even if it’s annoying.
