A lesson I learned after 11+ years as a Salesforce Developer: A successful Salesforce implementation starts with clean, well-mapped data. A few years ago, I worked on a Salesforce transformation project where a client wanted to migrate millions of customer and sales records from multiple legacy systems into Salesforce Sales Cloud. At first, the focus was heavily on Apex development, integrations, and automation. But very quickly we realized something important: 👉 The biggest challenge wasn’t building features. 👉 The biggest challenge was the data itself. Step 1: Data Extraction – Understanding the Source The client had data spread across 3 legacy CRMs and an ERP system. Before writing a single line of code, we had to: • Analyze source tables and relationships • Extract historical records using ETL tools and SQL queries • Identify dependencies between Accounts, Contacts, Opportunities, and custom objects This step helped us understand what data truly mattered for Salesforce. Step 2: Data Mapping – Translating Business Logic Next came data mapping, which is often underestimated. We created detailed mapping documents that defined: • Source field → Salesforce field relationships • Picklist transformations • Record type logic • Parent-child relationships between objects This mapping became the blueprint of the migration process and ensured Salesforce data models matched real business processes. Step 3: Data Cleaning – The Real Game Changer During data profiling, we discovered: • Duplicate customers • Inconsistent address formats • Missing contact information • Outdated records Before loading anything into Salesforce, we ran multiple data cleansing cycles to standardize and validate the data. Because in Salesforce, bad data doesn’t just sit quietly — it breaks reports, automations, and user trust. The Result After multiple test migrations and validations, the final deployment successfully migrated high-quality, structured data into Salesforce. The impact: ✔ Better reporting accuracy ✔ Improved user adoption ✔ Reliable automation workflows ✔ Stronger customer insights Final Thought As Salesforce professionals, we often talk about Apex, integrations, and architecture. But in reality, data quality and mapping are what determine the long-term success of any Salesforce platform. If you know me, I like to try to make technical concepts more intuitive and approachable. Here's a bite-sized look at how 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁-𝘁𝗼-𝘀𝗾𝗹 works. This is similar technology that powers Salesforce Data Cloud's Einstein Segment Creation functionality, and behind Waii's enterprise products. Notes + Comments (not included in the animation): * Text-to-SQL solutions also often offer semantic layers which help explain the tables being translated against; this allows the service to understand the query request, map it to the existing schema to identify potential matches, and then generate + verify SQL to return the expected results * Security + governance considerations are often handled based on the user providing the utterance... "hey, should Jordan be able to see the things he's asking about?" * Text-to-SQL can be abstracted away into declarative solutions/containers that allows business users to modify without interacting directly with code (similar to the Einstein Segment Creation experience). This abstraction then gets handled on the backend when the query is run. * Steps and processes vary across products. Integration Thread – #1: Retool x Salesforce – Build Live, Editable Reports with Ease When I was tasked with building real-time reports using data from Salesforce, Retool stood out for how fast and flexible it is. This wasn’t just about pulling data. I needed users to interact with the reports, edit values, and have those changes reflected instantly in Salesforce. That’s where the magic of Retool + Salesforce integration came in. 💡 🔧 Here's how I set it up: 1️⃣ Go to Retool > Resources > Add New > Salesforce 2️⃣ Choose your resource name and hit "Connect with OAuth" 3️⃣ You’ll be redirected to the Salesforce login. once authenticated, you’re connected! You can also connect to a Salesforce sandbox. Once connected, I could write SOQL queries directly in Retool to fetch Salesforce data and build interactive reports. But it didn’t stop there, Retool supports CRUD operations, so users could update records right from the report interface, and those changes would reflect live in Salesforce. For more complex logic or multiple queries, Use Transformers in Retool (which uses JavaScript). If you want more control over the connection, you can create your own Salesforce Connected App, and enter those credentials into Retool. I’ve used this method for integrating Salesforce with external systems, something I’ll break down in my next post.
