As we wrapped up the Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (ANHPI) Month at Electronic Arts, I sat down with Xiangyu Huang (Hannah), our Associate Quality Designer (AQD) on the FC Quality Verification team to learn more about her journey and experiences at EA. 🕹️What attracted you to EA and this specific role? I've always loved video games—they've been a big part of my life. The gaming industry is so fast-paced and full of challenges, which keeps things exciting and fresh. When I saw this role at EA, the data analysis part really grabbed my attention. Coming from a science background, I'm thrilled about the chance to mix my passion for games with my interest in data, and I'm looking forward to diving into something that's never boring compared to more traditional industries. ⚽What does your day-to-day look like? The role of an AQD can vary quite a bit depending on the team. In my case, being part of the Live Operations QV means my days are a mix of test designing, planning, and coordination. Beyond that, we handle a lot of operations work, like monitoring game health through in-game testing, telemetry dashboards, and player feedback. It's a challenging role, but that's what makes it so engaging and rewarding. 🦾What has been the biggest challenge for you coming from a different industry? It is the fast paced environment! In academia, you often have more time to think things through, but in gaming, you need to react quickly and make fast decisions, being flexible is key. I've learned a lot by just diving in and doing the work, and having a team of experienced co-workers who are super supportive has made a huge difference in helping me adapt and succeed. 🥊How do you balance work and personal life? I'm a big fan of UFC events, and when I'm feeling stressed, I find that training in Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu really helps me unwind and stay grounded. It's a great way to clear my mind and recharge. 🎯What advice would you give to someone with a non-traditional background looking to enter the gaming industry? The gaming industry is really open and inclusive, welcoming people from all sorts of backgrounds. For me, having a solid foundation in data analysis, Python, and SQL has been incredibly valuable for understanding telemetry data and collaborating effectively with data scientists and analysts on key initiatives. At the same time, I've seen peers with diverse skill sets – like business analysis, user research, project management, and product design – make significant contributions in areas such as refining player-first test strategies, cross-team coordination, and enhancing overall team operation efficiency, all of which are equally critical for building a successful team in the gaming industry.
