One of the most powerful aspects of ArchiMate is its ability to connect strategy with capabilities. The strategy-to-capability view provides a clear picture of how stakeholder drivers and goals translate into the maturing of business capabilities that enable real outcomes. In this example I create for SDLC governance, you can see how drivers like reducing risk and increasing stakeholder satisfaction flow down into goals such as reducing technical debt and improving time to market. These then align to expected outcomes, which are delivered through specific courses of action. Finally, those actions map directly to the capabilities that the business needs to mature, such as enterprise risk management, technology risk management, and enterprise architecture. This linkage is the essence of business architecture while using strategy and capabilities as the backbone. It creates traceability from executive priorities all the way down to the capability enhancements required to deliver them. It also provides a structured way to show where investment in governance, architecture, or tooling pays off in tangible business terms. Curious to hear from other architects. "Strategic Intolerance". I stumbled across this nugget today in an interesting topic from Gartner. It's has to do with how tolerating certain types of behaviors can define the culture of an organization. It is reflected in the everyday behaviors of its employees. It's evident in attitudes about work, how well they collaborate, and how they interact with customers and other stakeholders. As a result, the culture has an enormous influence on a company's potential for success. Cybersecurity is no longer just a control function. It’s becoming a commercial filter. Procurement conversations are changing. RFPs that once focused on cost, delivery timelines, and technical capability now include detailed cyber questionnaires. Not as compliance paperwork, but as scoring criteria. And that shift matters. Security posture is influencing: • Vendor selection • Renewal decisions • Contract terms • Even payment milestones In manufacturing environments, this has real implications. Supply chains are interconnected. Plants depend on remote diagnostics, firmware updates, system integrations. If a vendor introduces operational risk, it becomes a production risk. That’s why cybersecurity is moving upstream, into procurement. For CISOs, this means three things: 🔹 Engage sourcing early Security cannot be a late-stage review. It must shape qualification criteria. 🔹 Translate risk into commercial language Procurement teams respond to impact on uptime, contractual exposure, and continuity, not CVSS scores. 🔹 Standardise evaluation frameworks Consistent scoring models prevent subjective decisions and reduce friction during negotiations. The reality is simple. If cybersecurity is not embedded in vendor selection, it will show up later: in integration delays, contract disputes, or operational disruption. The strongest cyber posture today is not just technical. It’s contractual. It’s procedural. And increasingly, it’s strategic.
