As the year gradually comes to a close I would like to reflect on my first year at #IBM. It's been an incredible ride, and IBM delivered for me on my greatest desire: learn more about the practical application of #AI in #HR. I already new a lot about HR Automation when I joined, acquired over a decade of own research, RPA projects, and relentlessly pushing for more automation in my projects to reduce administrative work for the sake of more customer-centric services. I always felt that with the acceleration of technological advancement, fostering talent at a similar pace becomes equally to avoid us humans becoming the bottleneck to leveraging tech power. So, if you think AI is already putting your Talent Management under pressure, buckle up for Quantum in the coming years. What I really learned in my first year at IBM was, quoting my colleague Jon Lester VP HR Technology, Data & AI, "it's not about the technology". Yes, choosing AI solutions that don't lock you in and allow you to orchestrate automations of various kind across a multitude of back-end systems is a major catalyst. Yet, if you just bolt on AI (or any form of automation for that matter) to an existing process, the benefits are marginal. Why? Well, it's easy... if I relieved you of 20 percent of your work, what would you do with the time gained? In most cases people say: "I'd reallocate it to other things that I don't have enough time for. Fundamentally, however, nothing really changes in the way they do their work. That's the reason why most AI projects don't deliver on the expected ROI. Only when you start thinking an entire HR operating model “AI first” the full value of this technology can be unlocked and you actually create self-funding mechanisms that allow you to reinvest in innovation that in turn drives growth and prosperity... the actual definition of productivity. This means, if you want measurable value from AI, there’s no way around redesigning your HR service delivery model and therefore your processes on a blank sheet of paper “AI first”, meaning with the hypothetical assumption every step could be fully automated. Try it and you’ll be astonished. Whilst “AI only” will more often that not remain a utopia, this approach has the power to change your entire view to service delivery and stretch the possible. Plus, it has another benefit: you automatically begin rethinking, augmenting and creating new human tasks to the degree that when human interaction in your service delivery model does take place, it is of higher value than before. What you’re doing is ultimately taking the robot out of the human. A promising outlook for the future, I believe... happy Season’s Holidays to you and all the best for the New Year! In late 2025, Slalom hosted its annual client event, called R4, at the Jacob Javits Center in New York. The event is an exciting one – connections are made, ideas are shared, and there is a palpable buzz of energy emanating from the clients who attended. I had the privilege of attending several of the sessions we hosted. As expected, many of these sessions discussed Artificial Intelligence and the potential it has so change the very nature of the work. One of these sessions, led by my talented colleagues Amalia Goodwin and Tamarah Usher, challenged our team to think about an “AI First Organization” where everything is agentic – the tagline was “there is no digital transformation—only continuous AI evolution.” The detailed prompt can be found below: "By 2027, ACME is no longer a company as we once knew it. It is a living system. Every business function, from talent acquisition to supply chain optimization, is powered by intelligent agents. Employees co-create with AI, developing new offerings in sprints that last days instead of quarters. People focus on meaning-making, leadership, and creativity. Their innovation culture is fierce, driven by embedded generative AI assistants that simulate market trends and ideate new business models daily. Strategy is continuously updated by an AI foresight engine that integrates signals from across the globe. Operations are invisible and seamless. Core functions are self-adjusting and hyper-personalized. The tech stack is modular, governed by AI, and secure by design. Tagline: “There is no digital transformation—only continuous AI evolution.” That session, which I had the privilege to help facilitate, created a lot of productive dialogue with clients in various industries. It also helped me think about the future of my business in the data space. Much of the focus of Generative AI in data has been focused on data engineering (e.g. building pipelines to serve data models and data dashboards) and data science and AI itself (e.g. model building, inference, etc.) While these functions are critical, there are also major opportunities for Generative AI in Data Enablement. Below are some of my views about the status quo, short term, and long term disruptions that are possible in this new agentic enterprise.
