Pretty much any primer you read on starting an Enterprise Architecture practice at an organization emphasizes that in order to get the true benefits of EA it has to be both endorsed by senior leadership and have the involvement of senior leadership. Validating capability maps, helping define IT strategy and aligning IT strategy to business objectives, and defining value streams all require executive involvement, and yet so many organization I talk with have EA embedded in the IT organization(s) with a focus on application, inventory standards and technology reviews. Rather than hiring enterprise and business architects, organizations seem to be mislead into thinking having a team of solution architects is essentially the work of EA, which in fact can be run out of any part of IT. I am curious to hear from you: In your EA practice are you working with Executive Leadership other than the CTO and CIO, such as the COO, CEO and CFO? Do you have a capability map and who has validated it (and how)? What is the mix of business architects, enterprise architects and solution architects at your organization and who "owns" the solution architects? Do you do EA modeling and what tools do you? Finally, in your opinion, how do get EA to move up the stack in an organization that is mainly focused on application inventory, architecture reviews and solution architecture?
