“I had the opportunity to be Sai's colleague at Microsoft for one year starting in February 2020, when we were both part of HoloLens's eye-tracking team. During this time we worked together on multiple problems in geometric computer vision, image processing, and deep learning. Sai's drive to dig deep into challenging problems was energizing not only to me but to the whole team. In particular, Sai's healthy skepticism led him to ask probing questions, challenge assumptions, and investigate alternative solutions that have made our products better. He was curious about the background of each problem we tacked and was quick to learn and apply new techniques. In a telling example, Sai was presented with data showing that a deep-learning model that had been developed to extract image features for eye tracking under a specific configuration of and augmented-reality device was underperforming after its hardware was changed to accommodate the needs of a new customer. Sai developed a plan to understand the root causes of the issue, and implemented methods for domain transfer that addressed the problem. He learned about different image-warping methods and devised a solution that allowed for the re-using of the previous model, avoiding time-consuming and expensive changes to the device. Throughout this process Sai asked for suggestions, run key experiments that grounded his plan on real data, and engaged with multiple team members and stakeholders. In addition to being a highly skilled engineer, Sai is a pleasure to work with, generous with his time and always eager to help. He is open to new ideas and can both take and offer constructive criticism. It was my privilege to work with him.”
