As usual, I’m going to talk about something that maybe could be considered orthogonal to the actual post. Years ago, I read someone who thought colleges were obsolete given you can learn anything (their words) from the internet. I wouldn’t go that far but the rise in non-college learning and certification option, #microeconomics 101 Supply and Demand, more firms enter, the per firm q goes down. It’s not profit maximizing to produce the same q. With lower q, less inputs needed. My time in academia, I was an still am very concerned with whether incentives were aligned to learning or certification and what this meant for society. I felt that learning and “passing” were sometimes in conflict and I couldn’t quite figure out how to balance this and students who were not in a space that set them up for success (many reasons). So colleges that survive will have to provide value to students, not only certifications but also learning valued by the market and/or students (I assume they will be able to ask AI to project the net present value of go to any program).

Most portfolio risk doesn’t show up as a red flag. It shows up as a pattern. In a recent engagement with a regional financial institution, traditional portfolio metrics looked stable. Balances were steady. Delinquencies were within range. Nothing appeared urgent. But beneath the averages, behavior was shifting.
