What if confidence isn’t something you have — but something you practice? This question guided my latest conversation on Transformative Leadership Conversations with Angela Stopper, Ph.D. Chief Learning Officer at UC Berkeley. Angela brings a powerful lens to the topic of confidence that every leader should hear: Confidence isn’t a personality trait. It’s a skill — one you can build. In our conversation, Angela breaks down confidence into six learnable competencies and reframes it as something that grows through intentional practice, not perfection. Here are a few insights that stayed with me: 📌 Confidence is not fixed — it strengthens through repeated behaviors. 📌 A clear framework (courage, expertise, self-awareness, self-development, resilience, adaptability) makes confidence achievable and authentic. 📌 Comparison erodes confidence; self-awareness anchors it. 📌 Courage is the connector between confidence and leadership — acting despite fear, not without it. 📌 Mistakes don’t diminish confidence; they build it when we learn from them. 📌 Role models inspire, but they shouldn’t define your version of confidence. Angela’s perspective makes confidence feel both accessible and actionable — something any leader can cultivate, no matter your starting point. Productivity is not progress. If you don't want to waste all the great ideas you came up with during your summer vacation, keep reading. Every August I see leaders return from summer break full of clarity, only to lose it within days. The culprit? The obsession with catching up. Emails, team catch-up meetings, and revived routines feel responsible. But leadership isn’t about clearing what was. It’s about shaping what’s next. Organizing a meeting feels good. But making one decisive move changes the game. Reviving 10 projects feels productive. But doubling down on 2 creates impact. The end of summer isn’t a continuation. It’s a chance to start again with purpose. Here’s how to reset with intention: 1. Declare closure: not everything needs to be revived. 2. Name 2–3 priorities: align them with future impact, not past obligations. 3. Focus your energy: progress lives in focus, not busyness. Catching up looks backward. Leading looks forward. Leading Through Ambiguity Alia Rose Connor and I are continuing our series using the SCARF model (https://lnkd.in/eQhMudWF). This week, A for Autonomy: When things feel uncertain, people crave control. In times of organizational uncertainty or shifting priorities, a leader's response to the need for clarity can result in overorchestrating plans or processes as they try to create some certainty for the team and themselves. The desire to provide as much certainty as possible can undermine what people really need - some control. Some ways to do this are: 👉 Offer choice in the how, even when the what is set. “We need to improve onboarding retention. You decide how we might do this.” 👉 Let them design the experiment. “What’s the smallest test that would teach us something useful in two weeks?” 👉 Co-create the plan. “Given what we know now, what should we not work on?” Shaping the path gives people something solid to stand on, and ambiguity becomes more workable.
