High standards are not pressure. They are protection. Protection from confusion. Protection from mediocrity. Protection from avoidable failure. Early in leadership, it’s easy to lower standards in the name of being supportive. But over time, I’ve learned something different: People don’t rise to vague encouragement. They rise to clear expectations. When standards are defined: • Performance becomes measurable • Feedback becomes objective • Accountability becomes fair • Confidence becomes repeatable Without standards, everything feels personal. With standards, improvement becomes practical. High standards aren’t about demanding more. They’re about defining what “good” actually looks like — and committing to it consistently. Teams don’t resent clarity. They resent unpredictability. Strong leadership protects the standard. And in doing so, protects the team.

"Personality Hire" or Bias with a friendlier face? When hiring managers default to bringing on “different versions of themselves,” or lean into “personality hires,” companies risk building teams that reflect sameness instead of strength. Prioritizing “fit” over function often means choosing who’s most relatable, not who’s most qualified. It rewards assimilation, not innovation. And it can promote a workplace culture that values likability more than skillset, experience, or output. Hiring for personality can feel like culture-building, but it often creates a culture of exclusion. If leadership isn’t being pushed to look outside of their own reflection, your company isn’t hiring, it’s cloning. And that’s a growth strategy destined to hit a ceiling. I like to help companies shift away from biased hiring norms and toward frameworks that prioritize equity, performance, and long-term success. Grow with intention.
