The past few weeks have truly been an emotional rollercoaster. As a business owner, I’ve realized that the toughest challenges are often psychological. On days when I feel like I’m not making progress toward my dreams, it can be easy to feel like I’m falling short—unless I stay grounded with the right people and routines. Here are three lessons I’ve learned recently: 1. Hard work and doing things right don’t always guarantee immediate rewards. 2. Surround yourself with the right people. Many are quick to share advice from a distance, but few are willing to get in the trenches with you. Value those relationships deeply. 3. People care when you offer real solutions that improve their lives. Don’t shout into the void—focus on building solutions to genuine problems. After 20+ years building tech companies and currently running three ventures (Architech NYC, Port24, Shordex ), I've learned that partnerships can make or break your startup trajectory. Attended a panel during #NYTechWeek that reminded me why strategic relationships matter - and why most founders approach them backwards. Here's what I've learned the hard way: ➡️ Revenue first, relationships second Too many founders treat partnerships like networking events. The ones that actually work? - Both sides generate revenue from the outset. Everything else is expensive coffee meetings. ➡️ Your customers tell you who to partner with Stop guessing. When multiple customers ask for the same integration, that's not feedback - that's your roadmap. Listen to what they're actually asking for. ➡️ Document everything Handshake deals kill partnerships faster than product incompatibility. Who pays for what? Who gets credited where? - Put it in writing, even with friends. Trust me on this one. ➡️ Less is more Early-stage founders have partnership FOMO. Pick 3 max and execute flawlessly. Better to nail a few than half-ass many. The brutal truth? Your network is your competitive advantage, but only if you treat it like a business asset, not a vanity metric. In today's market, where products get copied overnight, relationships are what separate winners from casualties.
