In recent weeks, much of the industry’s focus has shifted toward Venezuela. The country does present new opportunities, but it also brings real challenges, and both will take time to fully understand. Against this backdrop, one question keeps resurfacing in conversations across the sector. If upstream investment does not start to rise meaningfully, how are we preparing for the oil supply shortfall many expect in the early 2030s? We are still working through the effects of years of underinvestment, maturing shale dynamics, long offshore and LNG timelines, geopolitical uncertainty and a demand outlook that remains structurally resilient. And it is worth repeating a reality that sometimes gets lost in the noise: demand for hydrocarbons, while at varying degrees, remains agnostic to any realistic energy transition scenario. They will be part of the mix. Period. At the same time, capital markets continue to reward discipline over growth. That shapes operator behavior in ways that cascade through the value chain. This tension is especially visible in the operator–supplier relationship. In today’s price environment, operators want lower service costs, yet expectations for delivery from suppliers have not decreased. In many cases, they have increased. It may look efficient from the operator’s perspective, but the economics for suppliers are becoming increasingly strained. And without a healthy supply chain, the industry cannot realistically address the supply gap ahead. This leads to an important industry-wide question. How do we justify the investment needed over the next 12 to 18 months to begin closing the supply gap of the early 2030s when the near-term environment continues to push for caution? There is real upside in consolidation, selective M&A, frontier exploration and long-cycle project momentum. But there are equally significant risks in decline rates, project slippage, supply chain capacity and geopolitics. Even fundamentals like water cuts, which often do not get the attention they deserve, are shaping decline trends and long-term supply reliability. Rather than claiming certainty, I think it is far more productive to ask the questions that help us challenge and sharpen the narrative. Are we mistaking short term comfort for long term security? Where does the real upside lie, and where is risk quietly building? Which assumptions about future supply are most likely to be wrong? At Rystad Energy, we do not operate as a black box. This flow instability can severely impact the performance of ESPs, resulting in reduced production or equipment challenges. Optimizing #ESP #efficiency in these conditions is complicated, but a recently introduced, "Boosted Gas Separator" design, which incorporates a new gas handler pump and gas separation system, can be used in conjunction with other advanced technologies to optimize ESP performance in gassy, unconventional operating environments.
