It is critical for banks to become majority lenders in the mortgage banking interest. Burdensome regulatory rules have hampered banks. The positive side is that in a downside of the market, banks have the reserves to meet their obligations for delinquencies and foreclosures whereas many independent mortgage bankers receiving servicing fees would not be able to meet their financial obligations.

This America's Credit Unions news brief announces the House Subcommittee's advancement of $274M for the CDFI Fund, and $3.4M for the NCUA's Community Development Revolving Loan Fund for 2026. While the potential allocation is less than hoped for, the good news is there is still support for community development efforts. Given what we are seeing with federal funding this year, many organizations are hesitating to put time and effort into public funding applications. Additionally, during the annual Q1 CDFI recertification process, approximately 10% of CDFI credit unions lost or gave up their certification status. Although public funding feels risky, 2026 may be a good time to apply.
