The Headline family is experiencing incredible momentum, and today our portfolio company DeepIP is announcing a $25M Series B, bringing total funding to $40M.  This is the kind of company that doesn’t just add AI to a workflow, but it sets the standard for an entire category. The momentum speaks for itself: 1️⃣ 10x ARR growth in < 18 months 2️⃣ Trusted by 400+ law firms and leading corporate IP teams globally 3️⃣ 2M+ chats on the DeepIP platform We’ve had the chance to back FX (Francois-Xavier) L. and Edouard D., leading their Seed round with Headline. Watching them take on a problem as complex and high-stakes as patent work has been genuinely impressive. And working with them has been an absolute pleasure: these 2 are coupling very high ambition and humility. Tech built in Europe, but opening the US office very early and FX starting a life in NYC with his family with 0 hesitation in order to build a global category leader in the IP industry. What convinced me early is still what stands out today: patent teams don’t need another standalone AI tool. They need something that fits the way the work actually happens: documents, long-running matters, multiple stakeholders, and zero room for sloppy context handoffs. Super exciting to see reports this morning that Waymo is in advanced discussions to raise $10–15B at a valuation near or above $100B, with Alphabet expected to anchor the round. That would be a major step up from Waymo’s prior ~$45B valuation in 2024 and a clear step change in investor confidence. Notably, Waymo has not raised this year, despite the broader AI funding frenzy. The size and structure of the round also make this feel like a step toward an eventual spinout or IPO. This matters because capital supercharges growth. Waymo is past the “does this work?” phase and firmly in “how fast can we scale?” mode. The company has already logged ~14M rides this year and expects to reach ~1M rides per week by late 2026 as it expands into markets like Miami, Dallas, and Philadelphia, including expanding onto freeways. At the same time, competition and consumer expectations are accelerating. In markets where Waymo operates, fully driverless rides are becoming normal rather than novel. Once people can reliably hail a car with no one in the driver’s seat, tolerance for “pilot programs” and distant timelines drops quickly. The race is no longer about whether robotaxis work. It is about who can scale them first, safely, and everywhere — a win for consumers who get cheaper, safer, and more reliable rides.

From our PearX S25 cohort, meet Pravāh, the AI-native operating system for the electric grid When Mohak Mangal, Dhruv Suri, and Aman Gupta looked at the strain on the U.S. electric grid, they saw a system pushed to its limits. Exploding demand and unpredictable supply have made blackouts increasingly common. This costs the economy more than $150B a year, a number that could 10x in the next five years. Mohak Mangal and team founded Pravāh to help fix it. Their platform helps utilities and grid operators make real-time decisions on load, generation, and congestion, reducing blackout risks, optimizing power procurement, and bringing much-needed stability to the backbone of modern life. We’re proud to support the Pravāh team as they take on one of the toughest and most important infrastructure challenges of our time.

In my experience, ~17 people is the tipping point where an org stops operating as a single atomic unit and starts fragmenting. Fragmentation kills speed. AI lets you push scale without pushing headcount. With all the tooling we're building, I don't see why Eniac Ventures would ever need to exceed 17 That's the future of VC

The data doesn't lie - brilliant deep tech founders outside Silicon Valley consistently face structural headwinds that have nothing to do with their technology or vision. Too many breakthrough innovations stall because founders can't find investors who understand long development cycles, lack access to operators who've navigated complex regulatory paths, or struggle to build the interdisciplinary teams hard tech requires. The science is there. The ambition is there. We're building the infrastructure to connect them properly. Details coming soon.

Martin Eberhard played a key role early at Tesla and even brought in Elon Musk. Then he was pushed out of the company for pennies. Founders get most of the attention in Silicon Valley, but the ecosystem is built on the people who take a chance and join early stage ventures. Unfortunately, those same people are often the easiest to cut out. Founders can dilute early employees, change vesting terms, and restructure equity with little effort and zero consequences (you can literally do it in Carta in 5 minutes). Daniel Kottke was a close friend of Steve Jobs and helped build the Apple I and II computers. He got no equity (Steve Wozniak eventually gave him a few of his own shares). Brian Acton co-founded WhatsApp and stayed through the Facebook acquisition. When he left Facebook over privacy concerns, he had to walk away from $850 million in unvested stock. There’s more awareness now around how vesting works, what happens during a liquidity event, and how to think about re-ups and dilution. That’s good. But the truth is, if someone really wants to screw you, they can. It still comes down to one thing: trust the people you work with. Or don’t work with them at all.

I had a great time chatting with Patrick O'Shaughnessy on Invest Like The Best. I've known Patrick since college, and this is the first time we've talked markets and investing at this much depth. The fundamentals of company building haven’t changed: people, products, and markets matter. But obviously, private markets have evolved substantially over my career: there are now ~6x more private unicorns than public companies with a $1b+ market cap. And at the end of 2010, just 2 public technology companies were among the top 10 in market cap; today it’s 8 of 10. AI (alongside software eating everything more generally) is clearly driving a lot of this. But it’s instructive to look at everything from the steam engine, to the early days of Facebook and Google user monetization, to real-time success stories like Databricks, Anduril, OpenAI and Waymo, to get a clear picture of where the opportunities lie. It was a pleasure to go deep on all this and more!

In the San Francisco Bay Area, founders are relentless about growing and scaling their companies. They spot opportunity, scale through uncertainty, and create companies that redefine industries. Recently, we gathered a group of founders and tech leaders to discuss the intersection of company growth and long-term personal success. Eric S. Yuan, Founder and CEO of Zoom Communications, shared the inspiring story behind his company’s growth and eventual IPO. Eric reiterated that the founders who create the most impact don’t just plan for an exit – they prepare for what comes after. Too often, personal wealth planning lags company growth, and that gap can become costly at the most pivotal moments. The rest of the evening was focused on closing that gap. San Francisco Bay Area. The World’s Hackathon Capital Data from my friends at Cerebral Valley, I graphed with their permission, see event sheet in comments. Data is only IRL events --not remote. The red “match stick head” indicates hackathons in SF Bay over 3 years. Why this matters: -Developers and business folks are building every weekend. Most events attract about 100-150 builders who show up on their own time. -Platforms learn faster. The software companies that sponsor these events receive rapid feedback from hundreds of builders. -Platforms gain net new users post-hackathon, driving adoption lead gen and builders. -New companies emerge from real connections. Hackathons bring people together in a natural way. Founders meet, teams form, relationships grow. -Existing startups test new features in the wild, integrating new tech and talking to new builders. This environment speeds up innovation. The Bay Area is not only known for strong technology. The real advantage is the ecosystem and the attitude towards always building I've judged 15+ AI Hackathons in my career and am excited to announce an upcoming Llama Lounge agentic hackathon in Q1 2026.
