🍇 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 (𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭 😅) 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝘄𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗟𝗣𝗡 𝗡𝗮𝗽𝗮 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁 I was honored to participate in the Non-Dilutive Funding panel alongside an exceptional group of leaders working across foundations, consortia, government programs, and venture—Jill Sorensen (MTEC | Medical Technology Enterprise Consortium), Holly Burkman (BIO Alabama), Sean Drake (Stony Lonesome Group LLC), Eric H. Hanson MD, MPH (MILMED Connect), Greg Grinberg (Origin Foundation Inc). A few takeaways that really stood out 👇🏼 🔹 𝗡𝗼𝗻-𝗱𝗶𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺 The strongest programs reward teams that understand who the sponsor is, what problem they’re solving, and how the work translates to real-world impact — not those chasing every open RFP. 🔹 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀 When integrated thoughtfully, non-dilutive funding can: • De-risk early development • Extend runway by 12–18+ months • Unlock sole-source or follow-on opportunities • Strengthen downstream equity raises 🔹 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗖 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 — 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 From an investor perspective, non-dilutive funding can meaningfully de-risk technical and regulatory milestones, allowing VC dollars to go further and be deployed more strategically. We’re seeing more funds intentionally use blended capital stacks — combining grants, consortia funding, and equity — to extend runway, improve capital efficiency, and ultimately increase impact. 🔹 𝗙𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗡𝗜𝗛 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗦𝗙 𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 While timelines can be longer, they remain essential drivers of biomedical progress. NSF funds significant biomedical and translational work across engineering, computation, and health that 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 NIH funding—often earlier than private capital can engage. 🔹 𝗢𝗧𝗔𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Models like MTEC's OTAs demonstrate how companies can move faster than traditional grant pathways and use them to open doors to new opportunities. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗽 𝘂𝗽 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 Health systems are stepping up divestitures and joint ventures to shore up finances ahead of looming reimbursement cuts. Non-core assets, such as labs, long-term care facilities, and real estate, are being sold or spun off, and some hospitals are being sold in markets where systems lack sufficient scale. The goal is to free up capital for reinvestment in ambulatory and specialty services.  - Ascension has exited markets like Binghamton, NY, and Michigan, selling hospitals where it lacked scale, while refocusing on ambulatory care with a $3.9B deal for 250 Amsurg surgery centers.  - OhioHealth sold select lab services to Quest Diagnostics, which can manage volumes more efficiently and reduce costs, freeing OhioHealth to channel capital into oncology and women’s health. Executives say these moves are less about distress and more about long-term strategy: simplifying operations, gaining cash reserves, and partnering with specialized operators. Analysts note that the trend reflects a broader rethink of what services health systems must own versus what can be outsourced or managed with partners.

Selling into the employer market? The “Big Beautiful Bill” could shift costs, access, and buyer expectations in ways that matter for your employer GTM strategy. Cuts to Medicaid and marketplace support are expected to drive up employer's costs. As providers treat more uninsured patients, this is likely to increase costs in the commercial market. Employees and family members who were previously on Medicare or a marketplace plan, may turn to employer plans which they previously considered too expensive. At the same time, rural hospital strain is expected to limit local options, leading to delayed care, higher-cost episodes and members seeking care at higher cost facilities. This shifts more burden to employers, making solutions that improve access, support navigation, manage costs and provide alternative coverage options for part-time or lower-wage workforces losing coverage more attractive. So, how should you adjust your employer sales approach? - Quantify near-term impact. Employers need ROI they can take to finance teams as they face increased uncertainty. - Make access central to your story. Show how you help employees get timely, appropriate care — whether through navigation, virtual visits, or partnerships — to prevent bigger issues. - Position around risk management. Help employers handle higher enrollment, more complex care needs and other unknowns with fewer surprises. - Support alternative coverage strategies. Highlight how your solution fits into plans that address gaps for workers who may lose Medicaid or ACA options. - Simplify rollout. Make purchasing and implementation easy for lean HR teams juggling competing priorities. - Showcase how you keep people healthy and working.
