“The interfaces we use today feel intuitive because of the work of designers 20 years ago,” per Jared Spool. Yet we lionize bleeding edge innovation—innovation for the sake innovation, novelty, and the technology it supports, in the case of AI. It’s rarely innovation for the sake of communication or more basic user needs. Since my earliest design classes (more than 20 years ago!) I’ve heard reasons to make a thing look like its brethren: sitting is *innate* but for a chair to be *intuitive* a chair needs to look like a chair so you know how to use it. It needs to evolve from what came before it, not to repeat but to rhyme. Too innovative and you fail the user. Raymond Loewy codified the limits to innovation with the MAYA principle: a thing (object, interface, idea) should be Most Advanced Yet Acceptable so people know how to interact with it. When designers and “thought leaders” on the hip, move-fast edges of our industry seek to break those boundaries, I’m sympathetic. It isn’t that users fail; it’s that they fail their users. Or, to paraphrase Saul Bass, when the user doesn’t get it, you’ve failed to communicate. We can build on design that’s been evolving over the past 20 years, and communication styles that have evolved over 200 years. What do we lose and how do we risk failing our users when we turn away from that history to flaunt innovation instead?

Most website issues aren’t design issues. They’re performance issues. Slow load times. Cluttered paths. Too many choices. No obvious next step. Modern users do not leave because a site looks “old.” They leave because the experience creates friction. Clarity increases conversions. Friction kills them. Things I wish AI would do: Flag when a deck was written by 5 cross functional partners Auto-reject any sentence with “unlocks seamless innovation” Detect when the brand voice has no actual voice Flag content and say “this sounds like every other B2B company” Translate briefs written by committee into something a human can use Instead, it just helps everyone write faster. Cool.

Ever clicked on a site and just... left without knowing why? Yeah. Your audience does that too. And it might be because of this tiny design detail: 👉🏽 Which button would you click? 🟦 A. “Submit” (rectangle, blue) 🟩 B. “Let’s Go!” (rounded, green) According to a Nielsen Norman Group study: ➡️ Rounded buttons = +22% higher engagement on mobile ➡️ Action-oriented CTAs (“Let’s Go!” vs “Submit”) = +31% conversion rate Because people don’t want to submit. They want to start. Breakdown: ✅ Use verbs that feel like an invitation, not a task ✅ Round your buttons on mobile ✅ Contrast color with background (green pops more on white) Which CTA do you usually choose? I recorded a long-form teardown of a Webflow project packed with moving parts: CMS relationships, custom nav, industry pages, and a full UX rebuild. Stratford came to me with an Elementor site that needed a little love: - No clear primary CTA - Sliders killing performance - Confusing navigation - Weak semantics + accessibility - Forms living off-site, which made tracking and conversions hard So we rebuilt the whole thing in Webflow, from the ground up. What we focused on: - A CMS that separates services from deliverables (40+ examples) - A custom mega-navigation that lets visitors choose their own path by need - A persistent, low-friction “Get a Free Quote” slide-out form - Industry pages + location SEO pages tuned for local intent - A refreshed visual identity that actually matches the quality of their work - Human-first trust builders: testimonials and photos I recorded a full before-and-after teardown walking through the strategy, the CMS structure, and how we approached conversion for a visual, local service brand like this.
