Community health provider Cambridge Health Alliance this month opened its first Medford location, which also marked its first new care center in 15 years. The new location at One Cabot Road in Medford includes 56,000 square feet of clinical space and provides services in rehabilitation, primary care, occupational health, pharmacy and orthopedics. The services will open in three phases, according to CHA. In the fall, a procedure suite will be brought online where patients can receive low-risk surgeries in a community setting. Another hospital CEO exits after just 1 year. Let that sink in. Crista Durand — former CEO of Newport Hospital for 10 years — steps into a new role… and is out in 12 months. No scandal. No headline controversy. Just a “mutual agreement.” This is happening everywhere right now. And most organizations are missing the real reason. It’s not a talent problem. It’s a fit + expectation problem. Here’s what I consistently see behind the scenes: • Boards hiring for strategy, then needing operators • CEOs walking into unstated landmines (culture, politics, financial pressure) • Misalignment on what success actually looks like in the first 12–18 months • Leaders inheriting problems that were never fully disclosed during the search And by the time reality sets in… It’s already too late. The hard truth: Most CEO searches are still being run like check-the-box exercises: ✔ Strong resume ✔ Prior CEO experience ✔ Good references But almost no one is rigorously vetting: → Situational alignment → Board dynamics → True mandate of the role → What will actually get someone fired in 12 months If you’re a hospital board or executive team: Before you launch your next search, ask yourself: “Do we actually know what we need… or just what sounds good?” Because the cost of getting it wrong isn’t just financial. It’s lost time, lost momentum, and organizational instability. I’m seeing a sharp increase in CEO turnover across healthcare right now. Operational Efficiency & Value-Based Care - Mergers allow for streamlined operations, centralized administration, and better alignment with value-based models. Example: Duke Health’s acquisition of a CHS hospital enhances clinical integration and system-wide performance. How to Align your Supplier Strategy with these M&A Trends? A. Prioritize Large, Growing Systems by focusing business development on expanding IDNs and health systems actively acquiring hospitals. These organizations are centralizing sourcing and standardizing products across their growing networks. B. Position Your Offering as a Solution for Post-Merger Integration. Consolidation brings operational disruption. Supply chain teams face pressure to standardize SKUs, reduce variation, and integrate systems. C. Target the Acquired Entities Early. Smaller hospitals being acquired are often the weakest operational link and most in need of product standardization, process improvement, and support. D. Build GPO + IDN Leverage. Investment concentrated in specific areas:  • 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: health systems deploying capital for expansion  • 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗰𝘆: deal growth up 143% and 138%, tied to aging demographics  • 𝗢𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲: viewed as strong near-term opportunities  • 𝗚𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆: slowed due to uncertainty around GLP-1 impact on long-term demand Overall, capital is shifting toward services aligned with aging populations, site-of-care migration, and specialty drug economics rather than broad provider rollups.

📢The 2025 Health Care Cost Trends Report calls for recommitment to the health care cost growth benchmark and urgent action to tame growth. Amid ongoing threats to coverage and access, health care costs in Massachusetts continue to grow.  The total annual health care expenditures per resident grew 8.6% in 2023, from $10,264 to more than $11,153, one of the highest recorded increases since measurement against the benchmark began in 2012. In 2024, the average annual cost of health care for a family exceeded $31,000, including premiums and out-of-pocket spending. The Massachusetts Health Policy Commission (HPC) report found that annual out-of-pocket health care spending per resident grew from $849 in 2019 to $1,049 in 2023 (a 29% increase) with more than 125,000 residents paying at least $5,000 out-of-pocket for health care, twice as many as did in 2019.
