Activities and Societies: After completing my first year at HBS in 1996, I took a leave of absence to attend Yale Law School, then moved to Latin America to co-found Endeavor. I returned to HBS in fall 2002 and completed my MBA in May 2003.

Since then, HBS has taught case studies on several ventures with which I've been fortunate to work in their early stages: Athleta, Chia Network, Korrus, and Rubicon Global. HBS also produced four case studies tracing Endeavor's journey from its origins through its 20th anniversary.

As one of five trustees, I designed governance that gives the school’s affinity groups a direct interface with DEIB leadership. To ensure broad consensus and balanced representation, the structure requires unanimity among the affinity groups and between affinity groups and DEIB before a proposal advances to the board.

JustGive was founded in 1999 by Kendall Webb to make charitable giving part of everyday life.

I met Kendall for lunch in San Francisco’s Mission District, not long after the dot-com bubble burst. The city’s energy had shifted, and funding for early-stage nonprofits had all but vanished.

She shared that JustGive was out of money. I didn’t have cash, but I did have a 1993 Porsche 911—a classic I'd restored. I handed her the keys and we finished lunch united in trust and…

JustGive lived to see another day and I walked away with the enduring example of Kendall’s leadership. Her humility—a quality often mistaken for weakness—left a mark.

That misperception is everywhere. It distorts how we think about power, favoring control over cooperation, zero-sum strategies over shared purpose. Kendall showed me a different way.

Sing for Hope traces its roots to 9/11, when Juilliard sopranos Camille Zamora and Monica Yunus organized fellow musicians to perform for the firehouse at Lincoln Center, which had lost twelve of firefighters that day.

In the months that followed, realizing the power of the arts in times of crisis, they continued to reach out across the city to share soothing music and art with communities in need, growing their ranks from dozens of artists to thousands.

    Poverty Alleviation

Poverty, like wealth, is passed down from generation to generation, and decades of racial inequity and underinvestment in communities have kept families trapped in a cycle.

Founded in 1998, LIFT's mission is to break that cycle by investing in parents. The organization builds families’ well-being, financial strength, and social connections to lift two generations at once.

I received the Gale F. Johnston Prize for my SPIA Senior Thesis titled "The Role of the Military in South Korean Politics" and covering 1948-1991. I chose the subject because it was undocumented as the official narratives revealed little about the people and machinery behind decades of rapid modernity-minded state-guided industrialization and xenophobic propaganda promoting "Garrison State" violence against those deemed enemies of the state. These included activists, students, journalists, bureaucrats believed afoul of party lines, and military class members and functionaries.
Without books and secondary sources, I reasoned that South Korean graduate students in the U.S. could be writing about this history without concern for consequences. A keyword search in Firestone Library turned up dozens of papers and theses written by South Korean graduate students detailing the Japanese and U.S.-influenced rise of the ROK military and its political ascendency.
The details were stunning and I tabulated the Korean Military Academy (KMA) student names, classes, and their influence over military hierarchies -- especially, KMA Class 8 -- whose leadership transitioned to civilian-based authority to secure the nation and determine its priorities. I was able to construct the organization of the KCIA, a formidable intelligence agency, as well as the flows of information and leadership within and between agencies designed to control political, industrial, and civil systems.
As a student, I gained access to ambassadors, generals, and policy-makers in the US and ROK who would otherwise decline any discussion about the regime that administered modern South Korea. The head of East Asian Studies at Harvard University and other academics cold-called me to request my tapes, but I refused; having sworn to secrecy, I destroyed each recording after use.
