A well-designed porch is like a welcoming committee that invites friends and family to share stories, catch up on neighborhood news, or quietly enjoy the breezes of a sultry summer evening. Porches bridge our public and private worlds, and convey the essence of one’s home.

In more than 250 stunning photographs of forty homes, Perfect Porches illustrates how varied these iconic American spaces can be. A wealth of structural appointments are presented, such as the extended eaves of a rain porch along the Gulf Coast, the shimmering copper flooring of a converted Amish cattle barn in Bluegrass country, and Outback-inspired painted thresholds in California’s wine region. Unexpected ornaments, including Moroccan pendant lamps, a vintage watering can collection, or a majolica menagerie can transform even the most modest porch into an oasis. This book also reveals a host of practical ways to bring privacy to urban porches, chic accents to old-fashioned verandas, and coziness to modern environments. Home owners share colorful stories about using their porches as communal stages for magical and sometimes mythological events, telling of ghosts encountered, arias sung, and families reunited.

Magnificent full-color photographs of each house show everything from the grand and elegant to the quaint and quirky, making this unique book a visual treat for anyone enchanted by the eternal grace of the American South.

SCADpad evolved from one powerful question: How can design change the world? As our global population continues to grow and concentrate in cities, SCAD, as a transformer in art and design education, has cultivated an entirely new vision of an urban community.

SCADpad embraces and advances the university’s deeply rooted commitment to adaptive reuse by utilizing a parking structure at SCAD Atlanta to create an inspirational and sustainable community that proposes an answer to the growing urban housing challenges cities are facing around the world.

An interdisciplinary group of SCAD students, faculty, and alumni worked for 10 months to design and develop SCADpad—from its architectural footprint to custom furniture to remote home control—to fit in the mere 135-square-feet of a standard parking space.

Each of the three SCADpad units has a unique theme and visual identity, reflecting SCAD’s global footprint. A common green space extends the living area, creating a community environment.

An organic garden is fed by a greywater filtration and delivery system, while a composting and recycling center helps ensure there is minimal waste. A rapid prototyping area featuring a 3D printer lets residents customize their unit to their preferences and needs – a perfect way to maximize life in a micro house.

Student-residents will share their experience of living large in a small space through social media. Follow along and join in.

Built in 1892 as the Henry Street Elementary School, the three story Eckburg Hall consists of red brick in Queen Anne Revival style and features lavish terra cotta ornamentation, a gabled central pavilion and a monumental arched entrance. Fashion, accessory design, fashion marketing and management, and luxury and fashion management students have access to this exceptional facility. It features seven design studio classrooms, including the large third-floor studio space which once served as a gymnasium when the building housed a public school. There are two lecture classrooms, a drawing and fashion sketching classroom, two accessory design labs, a dedicated graduate studio, a CAD lab with Cintique tablets, and a resource library that contains various fabrics, fashion books and magazines among other exceptional resources. Students in the fashion program focus on the skills of design, illustration, forecasting, promotion and presentation, while accessory design students build on the foundation of patternmaking and design skills, as well as mastery of industry-standard equipment. The fashion marketing and management program combines the study of design, business, communication and cultural studies; and the luxury and fashion management track focuses on design, trend recognition, marketing skills, product development, strategic brand management and marketing to predict trends in an international and cross-cultural setting. Graduates in these fields go on to become fashion designers, buyers, fashion stylists and journalists, label designers, couturiers and image consultants.
