Nielsen has reported that May represented the first time that streaming viewership in the United States eclipsed both cable and broadcast combined. Streaming’s assent has been rapid over cable in particular. When Nielsen first started measuring monthly TV consumption by medium in September 2021, cable represented 38% of viewership, while streaming only represented 28%. In May, streaming accounted for 44.8% of all TV viewership, its largest share of viewing to date. Both broadcast and cable fell to near all-time lows. TV watching is seasonal, especially for broadcast. During months with major sports championships and award shows (such as the Super Bowl and the Grammys in February or March Madness and the Oscars in March) broadcast TV consumption tends to see a bump. Cable, on the other hand, continues to see a slow and steady decline as sports rights move out of the bundle and cord-cutting persists. (Axios)

The Public Broadcasting Act does guarantee that every eligible local, noncommercial public media station can receive support from CPB. Therefore, this clawback would directly and immediately impact local public radio stations. This includes NPR Member organizations, responsible for more than 1,000 station signals in our network, as well as hundreds of other public media organizations.

With the end of federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, US public radio outlets are navigating tough decisions between content and layoffs. In response, New York Public Radio (NYPR) is launching the "Station-to-Station Programming Project." This initiative will offer cash-strapped public radio stations access to nationally syndicated programs like Radiolab, The New Yorker Radio Hour, Freakonomics Radio, and Today, Explained at no cost. NYPR's "Station-to-Station Programming Project" aims to support stations facing financial challenges, particularly those heavily reliant on Corporation for Public Broadcasting funds. Eligible public media organizations, constituting about 64% of the public radio system, can benefit from the WNYC Distribution portfolio without any charges.

Why Defunding Public Media Threatens National Public Safety Public media isn’t just about news and culture—it’s a vital part of America’s emergency communications infrastructure. 1. CPB: The Backbone The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), created by Congress, funds the public media system—especially small, rural, and Tribal stations that serve as trusted sources during disasters. Without CPB funding, many of these stations would go dark. 2. NPR & PRSS: The Distribution Engine NPR Distribution operates the Public Radio Satellite System (PRSS), a nationwide network funded by CPB that delivers live emergency alerts and essential programming to public and community radio stations—even in the most remote areas. PRSS ensures messages get through when the internet, cell towers, or cable services fail. 3. EAS & IPAWS: The Alert Network The Emergency Alert System (EAS), part of FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS), relies on broadcasters—especially EAS-enabled public and community radio stations—to deliver life-saving alerts. These systems remain functional even during power outages and infrastructure collapse. 4. Community Radio: The Last Mile Even stations not affiliated with NPR play a critical role, broadcasting EAS alerts and offering hyper-local emergency updates. Many serve as key entry points in the EAS network, ensuring regional and neighborhood-level communication when it’s needed most. What’s at Stake Defunding CPB would weaken this life-saving network. Public safety relies on a resilient, redundant system that reaches every community. Community radio, PRSS, and CPB funding together ensure no one is left behind.
