💡 A hard lesson from a failed product launch 💡 Early in my product management career, I stepped into a new role and inherited a product launch that was already well underway. It was a private-label cooking product—contracts were nearly finalized, the roadmap slot was secure, and leadership had endorsed it. On paper, my role was simple: see it through. But deep down, I had doubts from day one. ➡️ The product was overpriced for what it offered. ➡️ Installation was clunky and frustrating for users. ➡️ The sales strategy didn’t make sense in the broader customer journey. ➡️ And most importantly, it didn’t meaningfully solve a pressing customer problem. Still, I kept quiet. I was new, the decision seemed “above me,” and I didn’t want to be the one throwing sand in the gears. We launched — and just as I feared, the product never took off. Looking back, it wasn’t just the product that failed—it was me failing to step into the role fully. My silence cost the company time, money, and customer trust. That experience shaped how I approach product management today. ✔️ If I inherit a roadmap item, I still have a duty to evaluate and question it. ✔️ If I see risks, it’s my responsibility to raise them—respectfully, but directly. ✔️ The cost of silence almost always outweighs the discomfort of speaking up. One of the least acknowledged parts of product work is how much emotional labor it requires. We like to talk about product as if it’s mostly analytical. Frameworks. Roadmaps. Metrics. Decisions. But a huge portion of the job lives somewhere else. Product work is sitting in ambiguity longer than most roles. It’s absorbing uncertainty without spreading panic. It’s managing expectations that were never written down. It’s translating between groups who are using the same words but meaning different things. A lot of the work looks like this: Holding tension when priorities conflict. Saying “not yet” without eroding trust. Letting people feel heard without promising what can’t happen. Taking responsibility for outcomes you don’t fully control. Staying calm when everyone else wants certainty. None of that shows up on a roadmap. But it determines whether the roadmap works. Here’s the lens I use to manage this without burning out: • Name the tension explicitly instead of carrying it silently • Separate understanding from agreement so people feel heard without false promises • Write down decisions and tradeoffs to reduce emotional rework • Slow the conversation before speeding the execution • Treat clarity as a form of care, not overhead When emotional labor is handled well, it’s invisible. Things just feel calmer. Decisions feel clearer. Progress feels steadier. When it’s missing, everything feels harder than it should. Product work isn’t just about building things. If the job of PM is to embody the voice of the customer, then explicit PM roles are less required the more your builders embody the customer directly. The inverse is also true. e.g. DevTools need less. Healthcare needs more.

The longer I work in product, the more I believe the real job isn’t strategy or specs. It’s facilitation. Engineering talks in systems and constraints. Design talks in experience and flow. Product Marketing talks in positioning, narrative, and adoption. Business talks in outcomes and timelines. Everyone is saying something true — and still talking past each other. Having worked across IT, consulting, and as a developer, this part of the job comes more naturally to me. Not because I have all the answers, but because I’ve learned how different teams think, what they optimize for, and what “good” looks like in their world. The PM who creates real leverage is the one who translates. Who surfaces the shared problem beneath different vocabularies. Who aligns what we build, how we talk about it, and why it matters — early, not at launch. I used to measure myself by the quality of my thinking. Louisiana is a one-party state. Gerrymandered maps. Voter purges. Polling place closures. The people most hurt by the system are the ones most blocked from changing it. This is Jim Crow. Updated. Still running. The design hasn’t changed since 1890. Only the tools. Ten Commandments in every public school classroom. Anti-vaccine bills. A resolution supporting the elimination of the Department of Education. Prison population up 2,000. Parole abolished. $1.3 billion for incarceration — from the same budget that funds schools. An immigration detention camp at Angola. Cancer Alley: cancer risk eleven times higher than government estimates. Trump’s EPA gutted the one rule that would have cut that risk by 96 percent. Landry called climate change a hoax and put a fossil fuel executive in charge of energy policy. Natural gas reclassified as “green energy” using a Koch-funded template. A $2.4 billion toll bridge was handed to a private company for fifty years. Cassidy — a doctor — calling it “reasonable” to cut 158,000 people off Medicaid when 69 percent of them already work. Dr. Isolde Butler at CrescentCare in New Orleans sees what happens next. Patients lose coverage, skip their blood pressure pills, and wind up in the emergency room with heart problems that didn’t have to happen. We pay for it anyway, just in the worst possible way. More prisons. Fewer schools. Poisoned air. Sold-off infrastructure. That’s the one-party state. And then there’s the corruption. Follow the money, and it leads right back here. People Who Think, a Republican ad firm in Louisiana, got $77 million in no-bid DHS contracts for Kristi Noem’s $220 million vanity ad campaign — the one where she sits on a horse at Mount Rushmore telling immigrants to leave. The firm’s head worked on Jeff Landry’s gubernatorial campaign with Noem’s chief advisor. The contracts bypassed competitive bidding by invoking a “national emergency.” Even Republican Senator John Kennedy called it out — and then, as usual, did nothing about it. That’s how it works. They name the corruption. They participate in it. Same party. Same money. Same silence when it counts. GEO Group — the largest private prison operator in America — reported a 700 percent profit increase last year. $254 million. Record-breaking. Their CEO called it “the largest amount of new business we have won in a single year in our company’s history.” In Louisiana, seven of nine ICE detention facilities are former state prisons and jails, repurposed to hold immigrants. Detainees work for a dollar a day. GEO charges them $11 for a tube of toothpaste. A federal judge found the company had enjoyed “unjust enrichment” through illegal labor exploitation. The Big Beautiful Bill gave ICE $45 billion to expand detention. Private prison companies donated over a million dollars to Trump and Republican campaigns. They got billions back. That’s the transaction. That’s the one-party state at the federal level, flowing directly into Louisiana.
