Last night, I was reading about how the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is Democratizing Retail and Empowering Small Businesses in India and I am excited to share about it here. Launched in April 2022, ONDC has rapidly grown to a national digital commerce powerhouse, onboarded over 7 lakh sellers across 1,200+ cities, and processes around 14-18 million transactions monthly—transforming India’s e-commerce landscape with an inclusive, interoperable approach. Unlike centralized giants like Amazon and Flipkart, ONDC operates as an open, decentralized network governed by shared standards. It breaks digital monopolies by leveling the playing field—allowing MSMEs, local kiranas, and startups to sell on multiple buyer apps simultaneously without exclusive platform lock-ins. This means fairer commissions (3-5% vs. 10-20%), greater pricing control, and access to a pan-India market that was previously difficult to reach. The impact is profound: --Women-led businesses, artisans, and farmer producer companies have expanded their digital sales from niche to nationwide customers. --Rural and tier 2/3 cities are rapidly adopting digital commerce via ONDC, empowering over 5 million women entrepreneurs and MSMEs with new livelihood opportunities. --Mobility and logistics services on ONDC have grown threefold in the past year, showcasing the platform’s dynamic ecosystem beyond just retail. Yet, ONDC faces challenges in consumer adoption and user experience, especially compared to Amazon (31% market share, 150M users) and Flipkart (34-48% market share, 180M users). Despite this, the platform’s rapid ascent and government backing signal a significant digital public infrastructure milestone—akin to UPI for payments.
