The National Science Foundation (NSF) has renewed $19.8M in funding for BioPACIFIC MIP, a partnership between UC Santa Barbara, California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI), and California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA that accelerates discovery of sustainable, bio-based materials. Launched in 2020 as one of only four Materials Innovation Platforms nationwide, BioPACIFIC MIP provides researchers across the U.S. with access to cutting-edge tools in synthetic biology, chemistry, AI, and robotics—driving breakthroughs in degradable plastics, microelectronics, and next-gen biomaterials while training the future workforce. BioPACIFIC MIP is also training the next generation of scientists. More than 100 graduate students and postdocs have already gained hands-on experience in AI-powered discovery and polymer synthesis—skills aligned with emerging industries. This renewal supports the platform’s second five-year phase, expanding its role as a national hub for materials innovation. "Everything you always wanted to know about MHC-E, but were afraid to ask.... is covered in this Nature Review, the result of a team effort together with Louis Picker here at Oregon Health & Science University and Andrew McMichael, Geraldine Gillespie and Persephone Borrow from University of Oxford. MHC-E is a non-classical MHC class I protein that has been studied for many years by the Oxford group and that we stumbled upon in our research on using cytomegalovirus as a novel vaccine vector. We found that T cells targeting MHC-E might be the key to the development of an AIDS vaccine. Good news for the Eastern Washington ecosystem. "Two Spokane innovation clusters have garnered infusions of funds through the Washington state Department of Commerce's Innovation Cluster Accelerator Program. The Evergreen Bioscience Innovation Cluster has secured $140,000 through the grant program and plans to use that money to launch a bioscience incubator focused on "climate-smart lab operations." The initiative includes a two-year lease of a 3,400-square-foot lab-and-office space for startups working on public-health challenges. Michaele Armstrong, PhD, MBA, executive director of Evergreen Bioscience , says in a press release, "This award helps us activate underutilized space and drive inclusive economic development." That cluster, which is sponsored fiscally by Greater Spokane Incorporated, is working in collaboration with My Green Labs, Washington State University, and local bioscience firms." #spokane #lifesciences #climatescience #publichealth #funding

🌟 PhD Spotlight: Bivas Nag at UCSF our keynote speaker Meet Bivas Nag, a first-year PhD student in Alex Pollen’s lab at UCSF, where he is tackling one of science’s most fascinating questions: what makes us uniquely human? Bivas studies early brain development and neuronal maturation across species. By decoding the molecular and genomic blueprint of the human brain—and comparing it to others—he seeks to uncover how human-specific genomic features shape our cognitive abilities and our susceptibility to neuropsychiatric disorders. 🌍 His academic journey spans three countries: 🎓 St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai – where his scientific foundation was built 🎓 LMU Munich – Master’s in Molecular and Cellular Biology 🎓 Yale University (DAAD fellow) – thesis on non-coding regulatory regions and their role in human-specific gene regulatory networks 💡 Beyond research, Bivas wears many hats: Part of the leadership team at UREKA, a student-led initiative connecting science with real-world healthcare innovation. In a recent webinar, experts from UCSF’s Center to End Corporate Harm spotlighted the Industry Documents Library (IDL), a vast archive of internal corporate records that reveal how tobacco, chemical, fossil fuel, and food companies have manipulated science and policy to protect their bottom lines. From distorting toxicology research to concealing known health risks, these documents expose the systemic tactics driving what experts now call an “industrial epidemic” of non-communicable disease. The IDL’s more than 24 million searchable documents are a crucial resource for scientists, journalists, and the public. As shown in the PFAS case study presented by Dr. Nicholas Chartres, companies like 3M and DuPont privately documented severe health risks while publicly denying them for decades.
