Last week I attended several US federal AI and health events organized by Potomac Officers Club, American Council for Technology - Industry Advisory Council (ACT-IAC) and GovExec. The biggest shift I observed? Federal agencies are no longer asking “Should we use AI?” They are asking “How do we scale AI responsibly, without breaking trust?” A few consistent themes stood out: 1️⃣ AI is no longer experimental, it’s becoming infrastructure. It’s being embedded into help desks, research workflows, documentation, analytics, and modernization efforts. 2️⃣ AI success is fundamentally a data question. Not a model question. Not a hype question. Leaders repeatedly emphasized that performance, trust, and adoption all depend on the quality, provenance, and interoperability of underlying data. “Garbage in, garbage out” wasn’t theoretical, it was operational reality. 3️⃣ Interoperability is still the bottleneck. Agencies don’t lack data. They lack connected, standardized, identity-aware systems. Interoperability doesn’t happen by accident. 4️⃣ Governance is not slowing AI down, it’s enabling it. Responsible AI is less about restriction and more about transparency, explainability, and measurable outcomes. 5️⃣ Workforce enablement may be the real differentiator. The agencies seeing the most impact are embedding AI into workflows and pairing it with training, not just deploying tools. What struck me most is this: ⛔ Federal leaders are not looking for “more AI.” ✅ They’re looking for AI they can trust, grounded in authoritative data, integrated into real workflows, and aligned to mission outcomes. The hype cycle is over. The infrastructure phase has begun. Curious to hear how others are seeing this shift, especially across public sector environments.
