📍 Bisnow's Houston Retail and Mixed-Use event brought together developers, policy makers, and strategists to share candid insights on turning real estate into true destinations. 🎤 Method Principal Katherine Rorie  moderated the panel on Mixed-Use & Placemaking Transformations, guiding a discussion on how these developments are redefining the city. Fellow panelists included Don Quigley with Midway, Cassie Hoeprich with Downtown Houston+, Matthew Kelley with Market Square Companies, Matt Ragan with Rebees, and Devon Rodriguez with City of Sugar Land, TX. 🏗️ The discussion explored the challenges of repositioning older properties and the opportunities that come with launching new projects in Houston today. Last week, #aec firm leaders gathered in San Antonio to attend Zweig Group's ElevateAEC conference, presented by Stambaugh Ness.   In addition to co-presenting programs with Ying Liu, MBA, LEED AP BDC and Megan Miller, CPSM, I had the opportunity to co-present the Marketing Excellence Awards with Ying and attend the keynotes and general sessions. A few takeaways from the experience:   ✔️ If your firm is not focused on innovation, say goodbye to any competitive edge you think you have. The industry is evolving so fast that "wait and see" is a business model for obsolescence. ✔️ The AEC talent shortage continues … in a session that Ying and I delivered, I asked attendees how many worked for firms that are having trouble landing work. Not a single hand went up. Then I queried the audience about how many were having trouble finding people - almost all hands went up. Your marketing engine needs to help position your firm as a destination for talent. ✔️ If your vision, marketing, and business development are not aligned, the path forward will be difficult, as it creates both internal and external confusion. Does everyone in your firm understand and believe in your vision? Does your marketing team effectively articulate the story of that vision? Does your business development team effectively embrace that vision in their client and project pursuits? ✔️ It's time to leverage the digital labor that is available to you right now through AI agents, and manage those agents like you manage human staff. Determine what the AI agents can and can't do and give them assignments that align with the functions or tasks you manage.   Those are just a few observations, but there were many more! ElevateAEC is the industry's must-attend conference and provides great networking, excellent education and insight, and a lot of energy and fun. Make sure you plan to attend next year!
