Interview tip: Don’t just explain what you did in Workday. Explain why it was designed that way. In many Workday interviews, it’s easy to focus on steps: “I tested this process” “I created this report” “I validated this security role” But what really stands out is when you go one level deeper. Why was that business process designed with those approvals? Why was that security group structured in that way? Why was that data source chosen for reporting? That “why” shows functional understanding. For example, instead of saying: “I tested a Change Job business process,” You could say: “I validated the Change Job process, which included multiple approval steps to ensure compensation, reporting structure, and HR compliance were reviewed before finalizing the change.” That shift shows you understand business impact — not just system behavior. Workday roles today are not just about execution. They’re about decision-making, design thinking, and alignment with business needs. The more you communicate that, the stronger your profile becomes. Workday Tip of the Day: Switch from campaigns to the Engagement Builder. The Engagement Builder feature snuck under the radar for me. I've been manually creating campaigns in Workday to assign required training. Those methods are clunky and difficult to manage. Now I find out that Workday has a better solution called the Engagement Builder. It literally fixes most of the challenges I was having with assigning required training. It has a streamlined user interface, more flexibility when creating audiences, and makes adding required training reminders super easy. If you have the required training in Workday and you're not using the Engagement Builder, be sure to check it out.

ARI vs EMI… The most misunderstood choice in Workday reporting. I’ve seen this trip up: -New learners -HRIS analysts -Even experienced Workday consultants Everyone hits this point when designing calculated fields for multi-instance data. Should I use Aggregate Related Instances (ARI) or Extract Multi-Instance (EMI)? It sounds simple. But the wrong choice can: -Break downstream joins -Cause duplicate rows -Return blanks -Slow down your reports -Wreck integrations And here’s the kicker... Even in the latest cycles, the behaviour hasn’t changed… but the mistakes are the same. Here’s the field guide: ->Use ARI when you need to flatten multi-instance data into one field -Think: -List all Leave Types taken -List all Benefit Plans elected -ARI is the multi-instance cousin of LRV. -It pulls related data and outputs a clean summary value...usually a semicolon-separated list (often alphabetized). -Perfect when your report must stay 1 row per worker. ->Use EMI when you need to filter / compare / do set operations on instances -EMI is your set-operations toolbox: -Subset -Intersection -Except -Union This is where you do the serious work: -Only instances after a date -Find overlaps between two relationships -Show what’s missing -Merge two multi-instance relationships into one Pro tip: EMI comparisons work best when both source fields share the same related BO (that’s the set comparison). ->Common pitfalls: -Using EMI when you wanted unique summary values → duplicate headaches -Using ARI when you needed instance-level detail → lost data -Blank outputs caused by missing security -Poor performance from nested CF chains -Integration fields breaking due to multi-instance formatting (And yes...ARI can be heavier...EMI can be moderate-to-slow depending on what you’re doing.) How to save time? ->Use EMI for complex filtering, then chain into ARI or ESI when you need something usable downstream ->ARI for clean summaries...EMI for analysis & comparisons ->Document your field logic (and name it clearly: CF_ARI_…, CF_EMI_…) ->Test edge cases...“Why is this blank?” is still the No. 1 ARI/EMI question In short: ->ARI = aggregate into a single summary list ->EMI = filter/compare instances using set logic Both are powerful.
