What if we trained our teams to be more curious? Just finished reading IDEO's article on breaking down silos with human-centered design, and one section in particular stood out: https://lnkd.in/gRCZmtd4 “Mr. Zhang was focused on long-term survival strategies, while the individual product teams were consumed by immediate development pressures. Swapping perspectives wasn’t realistic, but the shifting macroeconomic landscape demanded a solution.” It’s a familiar story to me. Product teams, deep in the weeds, stay tenaciously committed to their original charter, even when that charter is six months out of sync with current reality. At the same time, leadership is navigating big strategic shifts and assumes everyone else sees the same picture. But here’s the deeper opportunity this story surfaces: What if innovation isn’t just about better tools or processes,what if it starts by teaching people to ask better questions? What if we trained not just leaders, but entire teams, to be more curious? To say, “That doesn’t make sense to me.” To ask, “What’s changed since this goal was set?” To wonder, “What might I be missing from where I stand?” And what if we trained leaders to stop assuming they’ve been clear? To check in. To ask what’s been heard. To step into the shoes of their teams and ask, “What does this look like from your side?” We talk a lot about alignment, but alignment is a product of understanding — and understanding only happens when curiosity is built into the culture. MIP: Minimum Inked Possibility. Before the wireframes and the pitch decks. Before the brainstorm that became a mural of sticky notes. Before the beautiful Figma mockups with well-kerned fonts and the AI-summarized to-do list… There was a napkin. Or the back of a receipt. Or the margin of a book you were halfway pretending to read. There was paper. And you. And a thought that didn’t know what shape it wanted to take yet. There’s something primal, something grounding, about starting on paper. It doesn’t judge your spelling. It doesn’t auto-correct your ideas into something more marketable. It just lets you think. When we start with pixels, we often jump straight into structure. What should this look like? Where should the buttons go? Will it work on mobile? But when we start with paper, we give ourselves permission to wonder first. To doodle, to scratch out, to let the idea find us before we force it into form. Some of the best builders I know are still doodlers. They still draw boxes around thoughts to see how they breathe together. They still write in all caps when something matters. They still carry notebooks not because it’s romantic, but because it works. Paper invites chaos, and with it, clarity. Not clean clarity—the kind that shows up on slides, but lived-in clarity. The kind you discover only after walking your ideas around the block a few times. There’s magic in holding your thoughts in your hands. Not swiping them, not zooming in and out, just sitting with them. Seeing what they do when nobody’s watching. Before we think about MVPs, maybe we should try MIP: Minimum Inked Possibility. What’s the smallest version of this idea I can sketch out without judgment? Without colours, without client-ready polish? Just the thing itself, bare and beautiful in its confusion. Because here’s what happens: When you write it down, it gets real. When you draw it, it speaks back. When you touch it, you remember that your hands are part of your thinking, not just your tools. Paper is tactile honesty. It’s the most forgiving co-founder. It’s the slow yes, the safe maybe, the space where mistakes become maps. And sometimes, it’s the only thing that tells you the truth about what you’re actually trying to build. So before you launch the app, open the tool, or prepare the brief, grab a pen. Draw the mess. Write the sentence that doesn’t make sense yet. Think with your hands before your head tries to look smart. Because some of the most beautiful things you’ll ever build begin as a scribble no one else can read but you. And that’s exactly where they’re meant to start.

This is very interesting and shows vision. The fragmented landscape of tools for US citizens and international users are not nearly good enough. Fundamentals like a unified and polished design system with UX telemetry (anonymized) and with basics like IAM and federated log in might make the biggest short term impact. My hope is that it is focused on everyday beautiful essentials and is fully non-partisan. Democracy and access are the greatest opportunities here.. A tool allows creatives to execute on their vision but it isn't always a one way door? Eric Ren sent me this article by Rune Madsen from Design Systems International which was blowing up on Hacker News: https://lnkd.in/g4UQ37y5 One paragraph stood out to me: "Figma is extremely powerful, but it is bending us toward a way of working that prioritises structure over spontaneity. As designers, we should remain alert to this shift, not because Figma is inherently bad, but because the values it encodes can quietly reshape our practices. The best design work rarely starts with order. It starts with questions, with play, with a lot of mess. We need tools that make room for that. Because if everything is neatly aligned from the beginning, we may never discover what lies just outside the grid." There's no denying that Figma has been a game changer for rapid prototyping, design-> dev handoff and collaboration. It's interesting to think about the way in which a tool like this influences the final design? Is it too restrictive or just right? What parts of the creative process does it not capture? What will the creative tools of the future look like? So much possibility.

AI: A Must-Needed Tech Leap for Society Artificial Intelligence is no longer an optional innovation or a future experiment. It is a foundational technology that society now must adopt to move forward responsibly and sustainably. Across healthcare, AI accelerates diagnosis, improves treatment planning, and extends medical reach to underserved regions. In education, it personalizes learning, adapts to individual needs, and enables access at a scale never possible before. In governance and infrastructure, AI improves decision-making, optimizes resources, and increases transparency. In business and industry, it raises productivity, reduces waste, and unlocks entirely new economic models. Most importantly, AI helps societies deal with complexity. Modern challenges—climate change, population growth, supply-chain fragility, and public health—cannot be solved efficiently with manual processes alone. AI augments human intelligence, allowing people to focus on judgment, creativity, and values while machines handle scale, speed, and pattern recognition. The real leap is not automation, but augmentation. Societies that invest early in ethical AI, skills development, and inclusive deployment will not only grow faster—they will grow wiser. For decades, we have been living in a product design construct where we think about design in terms of UI and UX - the buttons we press, the screens we swipe, the flows we optimize, the events we trigger. But with agentic systems, the challenge isn’t how someone navigates a screen or interface. It’s how an agent navigates a conversation. This is where Conversational Modeling & Design comes in. - Instead of designing buttons and flows, we’re teaching agents how to listen, infer, confer, understand, empathize, suggest, adapt and coach. - Instead of shipping features, we’re shaping skills, traits, context and conversational capabilities. - Instead of UX/UI, we’re becoming conversation architects - orchestrating agents the way a conductor coordinates instrumental sections into a singular, cohesive performance. AX will create new roles, new methods, and new disciplines for experience makers everywhere. As this happens, new skills around modeling & designing conversations will become as fundamental as wireframing used to be. In fact this is much of what I do now. And it's pretty fun.

I’m incredibly excited and honored to be invited to Savannah College of Art and Design as a visiting mentor and keynote speaker this March. I’ll be sharing perspectives on “invisible AI” in product ecosystems and leading sessions on the business strategy of design — including how designers can secure investment, navigate tradeoffs, and operate effectively inside complex enterprise environments. Too often, designers are taught craft without being taught influence. I’m excited to spend time with SCAD’s graduate students exploring how to bridge that gap — and how design can move from execution to strategic leverage.
