While business travel is back on the rise, the ascent has been anything but steady. Economic and geopolitical instability continue to weigh down the industry’s efforts to fully rebound. A story in Business Travel News in May shared sentiments from several experts and consultants, reflecting the current state of affairs. "It's really hard to draw conclusions right now," said Greeley Koch of 490 Consulting. "Even within certain industries, it's kind of a mixed bag." Added Charles Bacharach of Areka Consulting: "Depending on the organization, CFOs are looking at it and saying, 'Hey, where we can be conservative, let's do so.’” Despite some turbulence, however, corporate travel is gaining clear momentum. That was easy to see at the GBTA convention in Denver, where energy and enthusiasm were palpable among thousands of attendees. Corporations recognize that getting back on the road is not only beneficial, but business-critical. GBTA research released just before the convention found that, in the U.S., one dollar of business travel drives more than $14 of revenue on average. New data from GBTA's annual outlook report showed that global business travel spending is projected to reach a new high of $1.57 billion in 2025, but with slowing year-over-year growth of 6.6%.The latest data from Navan indicates that corporate travel spending activity increased 15% year-over-year in Q2 2025, but global growth is still below projections. While others idle in place, this is a moment of opportunity for strategic leaders to shift their travel programs into gear. Let’s get moving.

I want to get a quick sense check: I know a lot of travel managers are actively working toward integrating AI into their travel programs, but I’m curious about how you’re approaching it. From what I can see, some travel programs are testing white-labeled solutions, while others are rushing to implement AI everywhere. Personally, I think it’s worth taking a different approach and being a bit more intentional. At the end of the day, AI should do one thing: increase productivity. And what productivity looks like varies from program to program, depending on your goals. Too often, I see program owners trying to implement AI without asking the hard questions first. Before introducing any new AI tool or solution, I think it’s worth considering three things: 1. Does this help us achieve our specific goals, or is it just shiny tech? 2. Will it reduce mistakes that slow us down or frustrate travelers? 3. Does it genuinely improve the user experience in impactful ways? When my team faces these questions, and the answer to any of them is "no" or "maybe," we pause. AI for AI's sake doesn't move your business forward. It just adds noise. The wins we’ve seen at FCM, from launching Sam Intelligence across our digital experiences to email parsing and smarter trip support, came from staying focused on real productivity gains and letting customer feedback guide what we build next.
