Managing Change: Phase 5 – Agreement If you’ve been following along, we’ve moved through Denial, Mild Panic, Negotiation, and Acceptance. This is the phase leaders often miss because it isn’t loud. “This isn’t terrible. I can see why we’re doing it. I still don’t like it.” And that’s okay. Agreement doesn’t look like excitement. It looks like consistency. What Agreement looks like: • The new process being used without reminders • Fewer questions, better results • People explaining the change to others • Less emotion, more execution They may not be cheering, but they are committed. What not to do as a change agent: • Expect enthusiasm too soon • Push positivity that feels forced • Interpret neutrality as disengagement • Move on because “everyone’s using it” Agreement is progress, not the end. What actually works in this phase: 1. Reinforce the behavior, not the emotion Usage matters more than attitude. Results matter more than smiles. 2. Call out real wins Specific outcomes beat generic praise every time. 3. Model the change consistently Leaders abandoning it even once sends a loud message. 4. Shift from teaching to coaching This is refinement, not remediation. 5. Let people dislike it quietly Liking the change is not required for sustaining it. The common failure here: Leaders rush this phase because it feels “good enough.” Agreement is where habits are formed. Don't push too hard and do not walk away. Handled well, this is where momentum is built. Handled poorly, it stalls before Enthusiasm ever has a chance.
