The mission of the 100 Black Men of the Bay Area is to improve the quality of life within the Bay Area and beyond, by advancing the social, economic, health, and educational progress of African Americans.

We focus on the low to moderate income community, and offer programming and resources to support wise financial, health and lifestyle choices that can lead to family-sustaining wages and long-term career and life success. Our motto, “What They See Is What They’ll Be” refers to a “lead by example” approach that resonates with our youth who often lack the exposure or positive behavior modeling from caring and successful African American men.

During my time on the board, City of Oakland named April 9th 100 Black Men Day, and we received the David L. Cunningham Community Service Aware from the California Association of Black Lawyers.

    Civil Rights and Social Action

Not all youth are born with privilege, opportunities, or a positive network. Some are raised throughout their lives thinking they’ll never be able to live the life they’ll want. This is because of the environment and the people who they surround themselves with every single day. Every African-American person should have the ability to create the life they’ve always wanted and that’s what The 100 Black Men of America, Inc. provides.

  • Beyond the Check: Why financial assistance alone is not always enough

    Keep People Housed

Picture this: A family scraping by on minimum wage, their rent consuming nearly every dollar they earn. A single missed paycheck pushes them to the brink of eviction. A one-time check buys them a few more months—but what happens when the money runs out?

    Two Studies, Two Stories
In the fight against homelessness, financial assistance is often seen as the first line of defense—helping people catch up on rent, avoid eviction, and stay housed. But new research shows that financial aid alone isn’t enough. To create lasting housing stability, rental subsidies must be paired with supportive services like job placement, legal aid, and financial coaching.

Of course, there’s nothing necessarily wrong with these kinds of empathetic connections. Indeed, a sense of familiarity can lead to increased trust and attachment. Yet it can also create space for bias: familiarity can be derived from a variety of factors—the words someone uses, their background, conjugation, or even eye color—but it’s often connected to culture, ethnicity, and/or traditional access to social capital.

  • Helping Homeless Through Common Sense Tax Reform

    San Mateo Daily Journal

The irony: Our state fights poverty with ample resources but holds the nation’s single largest homeless population. Time and again, we hear politicians propose new methods by which to shelter and decrease the homeless population. Here is a solution you won’t hear every day: common sense tax reform....
