Insight becomes Action; Compelling Big Data Stories
Wired
See publicationThe saying goes “Every Company is an IT Company.” It’s also just as common to hear every media story about Big Data. From the last year’s high-profile case of the FBI plowing through data to point the finger at North Korea to the Music Industry (How Big Data can change the music industry). Another hot topic is IoT or the “Internet of Things.” Definitions vary but there is one basic consistency. “#Things” talk to each other and when they do, a lot of data is generated. According to a BBC article (Big Data: Are you ready for blast-off?) 2.5 billion gigabytes (GB) of new data was generated every day in 2012. By any standards, that’s a large amount of data.

Currency 2.0: Trust Has Been Verified
Wired
See publicationA traditional Russian proverb that became popular during the Reagan administration was “Trust but Verify.” It was part of the change journey that helped end the Cold War. The adoption of digital payments or digital “cash” has probably been the slowest of the Internet Age technologies. This was probably due to the lack of a simple, consumer oriented way to verify trust.

Insider Tweeting: We’re All Chasing Growth
Wired
See publicationAt 4PM on September 12, 2013 Twitter announced to its network that it had filed papers for an IPO (Initial Public Offering). “We’ve confidentially submitted an S-1 to the SEC for a planned IPO. This Tweet does not constitute an offer of any securities for sale. “ A demonstration of just how much “media” has changed. The company kept the formal announcement “private” but Twitter released “breaking” news to billions in a format that they have architected. Brilliant.

Microsoft and Nokia: Manufacture the Future
Wired
See publicationIn "Rise of the 2nd Mobile App War", Forrester Analyst Tyler Shields writes “Phones don't sell phones ... applications sell phones...” Applications are a good start but to achieve primacy, you need to work more broadly. Yesterday Microsoft took a step in that direction by finally acquiring long time partner Nokia’s handset business.

Microsoft A.B. (After Ballmer), Nokia Buy: Don't Fight the Future
Wired
See publicationEndless discussions of what the Ballmer era has brought to Microsoft and what it means for the company’s future need to end. Discussing what was or might have been doesn’t impact share price or the nearly 100,000 Microsoft employees. Microsoft has the potential for a transformational future, and it’s time to let go of the past.

Rise of the #ApexPredators.
Even today most home computers are not form-friendly devices. Cold, unyielding plastic or metal rectangular boxes lack the warmth of functional design. With the exception of Apple and a few manufacturers, most interior decorators would balk at putting PC in the living room. The form of the PC is a dinosaur in an urban jungle, poorly suited for survival. -
Only Paranoid Survive as Stakes in Online Security Raised
Wired

What we are protecting and from whom we protect it has evolved greatly in the modern era of online computing. Minitel offered similar services in Europe. Of the former “Big 3″ only AOL remains as an independent brand.

Stop Worrying About Privacy, Start Caring About Identity

It potentially has access to data stored in top Internet sites and other digital domains. That data is stored filtered and acted upon. The active word is stored. How much data is copied and with what frequency is moved into storage for use is unknown. The totality of sources being polled is unknown. Goodbye, CIO. Say Hello to the Chief Customer Officer
Wired
See publicationA tired IT joke suggests that CIO stood for “Career Is Over.” The CIO role was a slow progression or more often a lateral hire into what was a company’s most senior technical role. It was also least respected member of the executive team.
