#ThrowbackThursday to 2023 when MENTOR California’s Racial Equity Plan sparked a powerful youth-led video series. Two brilliant young men from The Hidden Genius Project interviewed me, and their questions reminded me why this work is so important. . . . At The Ever Forward Club , the #MillionMaskMovement uses the metaphor of a mask to represent how we share our emotions: we call them emotional masks. A mask is the outward appearance we show the world, like saying “I’m fine” when we’re actually #stressed, #sad, or just #tired of being asked by someone who doesn’t really want to know. In our mentoring work, we don’t settle for surface-level answers. We invite young men to “Tell me more about that.” For some young men it takes months to open up and for some, they have been just waiting years for someone to ask them how they are doing. When a young person feels safe enough to take off the mask, that’s when the real healing starts. Mentoring starts with listening more than talking. Advancing Mental Health & Housing Justice for Immigrant, Refugee, and Indigenous Communities in Alameda County At Diversity in Health Training Institute (DHTI), we know prevention isn’t just an idea — it’s a practice rooted in care, community, and dignity. This month, we joined 19 other organizations in the Prevention Matters Collaborative to present unified recommendations to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. Our goal: ensure Measure W funds support immigrant, refugee, and Indigenous communities at risk of homelessness. What’s Measure W? Passed in 2020, it’s a half-cent sales tax to address homelessness and housing insecurity. With both one-time and ongoing revenues now available, we’re urging the County to invest upstream — in prevention strategies that keep people housed and healthy before crisis hits. Why prevention matters Strong mental health and stable housing are deeply connected. Services like our Sidra program provide culturally responsive mental health support to communities navigating trauma, displacement, language barriers, and housing instability. But with UELP funding set to sunset in June 2026, these programs face an uncertain future. We’re advocating for Measure W to: - Continue UELP programs as essential services - Add housing navigation supports to our prevention mental health programs - Fund capacity-building so organizations can adapt to changing needs - Conduct a needs assessment on “hidden homelessness” for immigrant, refugee, and indigenous communities — the overcrowded, couch-surfing, and unsafe living situations that official counts often miss Hidden homelessness, real harm Women fleeing domestic violence, youth moving between friends’ homes, workers facing exploitation, and families too afraid to access services — these are the realities we see every day. When homelessness is narrowly defined, people fall through the cracks. The takeaway: Investing in prevention now means fewer crises tomorrow — and a stronger, more connected Alameda County for us all. 💬 How can we make prevention and belonging central to housing justice in our communities? #HousingJustice #MentalHealthEquity #ImmigrantInclusion #PreventionWorks #MeasureW #PublicHealth
