Excited we kicked off #PREnergyWeek26! Today’s opening sessions highlighted something essential for Puerto Rico’s future: real collaboration across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to advance a resilient and prosperous energy system. I’m honored to join fellow leaders and experts this week as we discuss practical solutions that strengthen the future of Puerto Rico.

Read the entire (41 page) report. "ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) reported record-breaking peak demand of 85,508 MW in August 20236 , and anticipates steep increases each year going forward.7 In fact, ERCOT officials describe an “insatiable” appetite for power, noting that new load is being added to the system “faster and in greater amounts than ever before” "... both a boon and a design challenge for the grid. West Texas oil producers, for example, are increasingly electrifying their operations (drilling rigs, pipeline compressors, gas processing equipment, etc.) to improve efficiency, enhance wellsite safety, and reduce emissions.10 This new load creates significant new demand in remote areas."

Puerto Rico boasts the 1st operational virtual power plant (VPP) in all of Latin America and the Caribbean. And it required people like you, Juan Carlos Patiño Peralta, DrBA(c),MSME,P.E., to pull that off. The #CBES+ #VPP is a monument to Utility/Private Sector collaboration. Its at least 81,000 behind the meter batteries in people’s homes literally stopping blackouts for everyone else in the whole grid, in the whole island. CBES+ is one key factors why the predicted and dreaded generation-shortfall-related summer blackouts of 2025 DID NOT HAPPEN. People’s batteries saving livelihoods, and even lives, by literally keeping the lights on for the whole society. Thanks the VPP-team’s efforts @ LUMA Energy & the full collaboration of battery aggregators like Tesla Energy Sunrun, Sunnova Energy #Sunnova, #Sonnen and others, #PuertoRico🇵🇷 has built a world class brownout and blackout security system that has only been seen before in very advanced jurisdictions, such as Germany🇩🇪, the UK🇬🇧, a handful of U.S. states🇺🇸, Japan🇯🇵, and Australia🇦🇺. And this VPP, which grows organically by thousands of batteries a month, already has the potential of around +170,000 batteries, ready to be employed to help stop even bigger blackouts for all. Remember all these batteries can do sustained, on demand, energy dispatch at around 5kW. Do the math!- that’s nearing gigawatt territory. It’s a huge feat and a source of pride. And evidence that collaboration can achieve results even greater than the sum of its parts. “Puerto Rico is now home to the first operational Distributed Power Plant in Latin America and the Caribbean. The DPP functions by aggregating thousands of local, internet-connected solar arrays and batteries, coordinating them as managed fleets. Currently, over 70,000 households (or 5% of the island’s households) are enrolled in the grid operator’s Customer Battery Energy Sharing program.”

This 90MW solar farm is first utility-scale solar project to come online in over a decade in Puerto Rico. It brings the totals to around 325MW of utility scale and 1,400MW of distributed generation, which toghether generate over 17% of the island’s total electricity consumption. https://lnkd.in/eyMS_ydr
