As a former teacher, I know firsthand the stakes of ensuring every student has the tools and opportunities to thrive. That’s why today’s announcement is so meaningful. After months of careful research and analysis, I am proud to share Beyond the Grade: A Close Look at Miami’s K-12 System — the Partnership for Miami’s first comprehensive education report. This work is designed to give our community a clear view of both our progress and the challenges that remain. Alongside the report, we announced a nearly $2 million investment in @lucyproject305 to expand evidence-based literacy instruction in Miami-Dade schools. Together, these steps represent a commitment to strengthening outcomes for students and families across our community. I am grateful to my colleagues at @PartnershipforMiami and to the educators, leaders, and partners who made this possible. Please join me at the HBCU National Band & Orchestra Consortium Conference at the Atlanta Evergreen Lakeside Resort in Stone Mountain, GA as I present on the topic: How to use your band program to change school Culture This session supports new and veteran music educators in understanding their broader impact on school culture and community engagement. Participants will explore how to build a strong, well-structured band program that fosters collaboration, positive relationships, and meaningful partnerships. The session will provide strategies to align programs with school goals, advocate effectively, and approach growth with an arts administrator’s perspective. Attendees will also learn how to design concerts and assemblies that reflect school and community demographics, socio-economic factors, academic performance, and suspension data. A successful band program helps students, especially post-COVID, build peer connections and feel seen, heard, valued, and safe. Directors will explore ways to create a program environment that serves as a supportive, protected space in the school. Key topics include social-emotional learning, communication of expectations, discipline strategies, parent engagement, classroom setup, and rehearsal routines. Finally, participants will examine how to align their program’s strategic plan with the school’s SIP and SPP to strengthen recruitment, retention, and long-term success.

New from our CEO: “Nearly $2 Million Invested in Literacy: How The Lucy Project Is Building Capacity in Miami’s Classrooms” In this message, Sandra Bermudez shares how a major grant from The Partnership for Miami will let us scale up our Literacy Hub, expanding into more schools, supporting over 800 students during the most critical years of reading development, and building long-term teacher coaching & instructional capacity rooted in the Science of Reading. We also spotlight a proof point: at Norwood Elementary, through our Hub model, 91% of kindergarten students who consistently participated hit or exceeded grade-level reading benchmarks. We’re grateful for this investment, and more importantly, excited for the impact ahead. Bilingual programs play a vital role in advancing inclusive economic development within Latino communities. Thanks to support from initiatives like the Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) programs, bilingual education, technical assistance, and small business development services are reaching more entrepreneur “ensuring that language is a bridge to opportunity”, not a barrier. After several years of services and support, national organizations such as NALCAB (National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders), UnidosUS, and Prosperity Now, continue to lead important efforts that strengthen Latino-owned businesses and support community-based strategies for long-term growth and equity. By investing in culturally responsive and bilingual initiatives, we create pathways for more families, entrepreneurs, and communities to participate fully in our shared economic future.
