Yesterday, IBM dropped their new WebMethods Hybrid Integration, which brings some cool upgrades around unified API management and orchestration—now with AI to help out. This comes right in line with Gartner's prediction that API demand will jump by about 30% by 2026, mostly thanks to AI and tools using large language models (LLMs). It’s exciting to see how AI is really changing the way we use APIs and making them even more important moving forward.

Google's algorithms know me very well, as my news feed is filled with articles on Generative AI. The daily buzz around "AI Agents"—specialized bots for every conceivable task—has reached a fever pitch. However, I view "Agent Sprawl" as merely the latest form of technical debt. The future does not lie in managing a library of thousands of static agents, each tailored for specific tasks, but in nurturing a single Orchestrator LLM. While we may not be there yet, that day is on the horizon. By equipping a capable model with our business context and process knowledge, it can dynamically generate the solutions we need in real time. I recently demonstrated this by condensing what traditionally took three months for a proof of concept into just one afternoon of prompt engineering using the Antigravity IDE and Gemini 3. It is remarkable how straightforward what was once complex has become. The models are incredibly capable even today when provided with the right information. Whether designing intricate workflows or automating a Microsoft Teams message notification, the focus should become less and less on hard-coding the "how" into an agent. Instead, we should aim to provide the LLM with the context, including business processes, it needs to solve our problems for us. I get it. We are just learning to crawl and agents are a logical step. Soon though, we will be able to run. It is time to begin the shift from rigid agent management to dynamic, context-aware orchestration, making this vision a reality sooner rather than later.

🔎 When is the right time to start an Enterprise Architecture (EA) practice? After 25+ years in IT and 15+ years in EA, this question has surfaced repeatedly across industries, company sizes, and company age. 🚀 From consulting with Fortune 500 clients—either augmenting mature EA teams or helping establish new practices—to leading transformations in Fortune 50 companies, I’ve seen challenges emerge at every stage. Strategic alignment, executive buy-in, and stakeholder engagement often determine success more than revenue or company age. 🏢 In large enterprises, competing business units and time-to-market pressures can make standardization difficult. 🌍 Global markets present their own hurdles, particularly when corporate teams attempt alignment. 💡 Even in a $1T software company, shifting from an engineering mindset to long-term architectural thinking required deliberate effort. 📈 Today, at a company of $900M+ in revenue, we’re building an EA practice with direct access to business leaders and technology teams—a key advantage at this scale. However, as organizations grow, imposing structure from a central EA function becomes increasingly complex. 🤔 A colleague recently suggested that EA should begin the moment a company performs any M&A activity—not waiting for a milestone like revenue or headcount. 💬 What do you think? In our latest Edge Monsters 👿 post, we discuss some of the challenges of going beyond greenfield and headless edge deployments to bringing along the enterprise.
