Chaos Governance - The IT Roadmap Survival Guide In IT, a "Strategic Roadmap" usually has a shelf life of about three weeks, six if you are lucky. 😅 Week 1: Everyone agrees. We are aligned. This is the way. Week 4: "Hey, quick question, can we just squeeze in this one "tiny" (only 3 months of work) project?" Shifting priorities are the norm, not the exception. The real challenge is surviving them without spiking everyone's blood pressure, and more importantly, without losing your team's trust. I am using the view below to frame those conversations and minimize "shiny object syndrome" and unexpected pivots. We map everything out - from the hot stuff (AI, Zero Trust) to the necessary plumbing (HRIS integration, File Storage Modernization, SSO all the things). Admittedly, it doesn’t stop the chaos, but it definitely organizes it 😁. Question for the group: How do you handle the inevitable "mid-quarter pivot"? I see a configurable enterprise in about 10-20 years if not more. More pessimistic because a lot of things need to happen first. Nocode/lowcode will be so 2020s :p The Organization... 1️⃣ have established a #realtime dynamic view of the enterprise as a #lean turnaround time value stream - a #digitaltwin 2️⃣ is fully digitized and data driven with event based architecture in place to detect movements of a process. Imagine McDonald's order process meeting Application Process Management software at a value stream view 3️⃣ have acquired end to end enterprise resource management to see the impact of sales, backlog, down to cost items, sourcing, procurement, spend, planning Vs actual, amortized and variable cost items as a flow and alert of how funds are used. Particularly where bottlenecks are and where funds flow fast. Imagine the 100 Power BIs shrunk to 1 dynamic view. Overlayed against the value stream view earlier.

Gained many great insights into how to use AI to improve solution design and solutions themselves. It’s not really a Gartner thing but the conference title could have easily swapped out Application Innovation for Artificial Intelligence. If I had one tip for you it would be to become more AI Literate.

This is why I don’t like “brown bags” or “lunch and learns.” Learning is valuable to the organization, making it a lunch time activity sends the message that it’s not important enough to spend company time on it. If you’re giving talks on topics not related to the work being done, then sure, lunch and learns are fine.

Confession time: I don't do subnet maths in my head. 🤫 Been doing a little subnetting subnetting work this over the last week or two and found myself (once again) opening random calculator tools. Figured, why not build one for ReadTheManual?  So I did 🛠️ Old tech. Still essential. Nobody admits they use these, but everyone does. The kind of tool that: - Nobody talks about at meetups ❌ - Everyone actually uses ✅ - Has existed since IPv4 was young 🦕 - Will still be relevant when IPv6 "takes over" 😏 Added it to the Networking section. Free, fast, go bookmark it 😉 . Because the only people doing subnet math manually are either: 1. Taking an exam 2. Showing off 3. Secretly using a calculator anyway Life's too short. Use tools. As both an instructional designer and a lifelong actor/director, I’ve spent years helping subject matter experts (SMEs) in pharmacy, claims, and eligibility turn deep knowledge into learning that actually sticks. What I’ve learned on stage and in the classroom is this: expertise doesn’t automatically make you a great teacher — but with the right support, it can. Here are 3 things I wish more SMEs knew about making their expertise teachable: 🎭 Simplicity = clarity. Your audience isn’t reading Shakespeare — keep it clean and actionable. 🎭 Stories teach better than bullet points. Humans connect to narrative, not checklists. 🎭 Learners don’t need to know everything — just what to do next. Great learning is a performance — and the audience always knows when it’s working. The rapid advancement of AI is reshaping the workforce, presenting both exciting opportunities and significant challenges. Taking advantage of a Centene “No Meeting Friday (it’s a nice idea)," my peers and I exchanged emails with our thoughts on the attached link, with the focus of ensuring our teams members have a seat on the bus. Our discussions underscored the potential for widespread job displacement across many professions, making upskilling in AI more crucial than ever. One concern raised is how to advise students entering fields like medicine and finance, given the uncertainty around AI-driven automation. The consensus is clear: AI will not replace highly skilled professionals who know how to leverage these tools, but those who fail to adapt may be left behind. Integrating AI skills into education and professional development is essential. Equally important is the cultivation of deep human skills—resilience, flexibility, agility, and empathy. These qualities, combined with AI literacy, will help individuals remain competitive in a changing landscape. Recent hiring trends show that the ability to leverage AI is becoming more valued than traditional technical knowledge. The unresolved challenge: How should we guide the next generation in career planning amid rapid AI advancement?
