“In 2018/2019 I oversaw work for the development of a "Smart City" app for Avis Rental Car. I brought in Keyairra Wright to be part of that project, and she then played a central role. The Smart City app had to integrate data from dozens of APIs: buses, taxis, airlines, subways, Uber, Lift, Lime, etc. The app itself was a React project, and Keyairra demonstrated great skill in the coding of the app, the review of the code with her teammates, and the finding and fixing of all bugs. She has natural leadership qualities, and the rest of the team informally relied on her to provide guidance when that guidance was lacking from other parts of the project. The vagaries of the project made planning difficult, and those difficulties became obstacles that the team had to overcome. For instance, we initially relied on an outside firm in Switzerland to generate estimates of distance and travel time for us, but when the Swiss firm proved unable to deliver what we needed, we took over much of the work ourselves, with Keyairra playing a key role in planning what that transition would look like. Another example, at one point Avis almost canceled funding for the project, then they increased the funding, then later they limited the funding. With every change we made new plans about how many people we could hire. In the end most of the work was handled by just three people, of whom Keyairra played a crucial role in deciding how the work should be distributed among teammates. In short, Keyairra is an excellent software developer who cares about the quality of the code on a project; she also has such excellent team skills that others on the team naturally look to her for help resolving any bugs, reviewing any code, or making decisions about how work should be divided up. In a crisis, she remains calm, and when facing turbulence on a project, she helps organize everyone to make the changes necessary to ensure success despite the turbulence. Any team of which she is a part is automatically stronger because of her presence. ”

Tech conferences aren’t just about panels and booths. They’re about possibility and proximity. (Proximity to people, opportunities, and ideas that can change your career trajectory overnight.) With AfroTech around the corner, here’s a quick reminder of why these events are worth every minute 👇🏾 1️⃣ Meet ambitious people chasing goals like yours. You’ll find peers who understand your grind and can become collaborators, mentors, or lifelong friends. 2️⃣ Get in front of recruiters…dozens at once. Skip the cold emails and LinkedIn messages. You’re literally in the room with decision-makers. Make it count! 3️⃣ Interview for roles right on-site. Some companies do live interviews. You could walk in with a resume and walk out with an offer. 4️⃣ Level up with workshops and professional sessions. These are mini masterclasses from leaders who’ve done what you’re trying to do. Take notes! 5️⃣ Build real relationships at socials, mixers, and after-parties. That handshake at 10 p.m. could turn into your next big break. 6️⃣ Schools and employers often cover costs. Ask. Apply. Advocate for yourself. Closed mouths don’t get fed. 7️⃣ I landed my first SWE internship at a computing conference (Tapia). One conversation with a recruiter, that’s all it took for me to jumpstart my career in tech. You could be next. The truth: Conferences collapse years of networking, learning, and growth into just a few unforgettable days. If you’ve ever wondered whether to go… Here’s your sign to show up. ♻️ Repost this for someone who’s still on the fence.

NYC's Election Results: A Signal for Tech's Next Regulatory Frontier Zohran Mamdani's confirmed victory is more than a political headline; it's a indicator of the evolving regulatory landscape for tech in New York City. As a prominent progressive voice, his policy priorities directly intersect with core tech operations: · Housing & PropTech: Expect intensified focus on tenant protections and data privacy laws that could impact how real estate tech platforms operate. · Gig Economy & Labor: The push for wage standards and benefits for gig workers is likely to gain further momentum, affecting delivery, ride-share, and other on-demand platforms. · Public Services & Civic Tech: This win signals strong support for modernizing public services, creating opportunities for civic tech companies that partner with the city on equitable solutions. #NYC #TechPolicy #NYCTech #PropTech #GigEconomy #CivicTech #Innovation #PublicPolicy

Introducing Intervux – Revolutionizing Hiring in 2025 Posted by Chukwuemeka Rich, Founder at Intervux | September 4, 2025 Few months ago, I was just another job seeker, tirelessly applying for tech roles, pouring my heart into every application. I’d spend hours crafting resumes, tailoring cover letters, and preparing for interviews, only to hit a wall: the interview itself. Time after time, I’d walk into interviews feeling confident, only to be thrown off by unexpected technical questions or behavioral prompts I hadn’t prepared for. No matter how much I studied, I felt like I was guessing what the interviewer wanted. The worst part? I had no one to guide me, no coach, no feedback, just rejection emails and silence. It was frustrating, isolating, and honestly, it shook my confidence. Candidates like me needed tailored practice and real-time feedback to ace interviews, while companies needed a way to efficiently assess skills without wasting time or resources. Intervux bridges that gap. What is Intervux? Intervux is an AI-powered mock interview and hiring Coach designed to make recruitment smarter, fairer, and faster. For job seekers, we offer personalized mock interviews with AI-generated questions tailored to your role and skill level, plus instant feedback to help you improve. Why Now? The job market in 2025 is more competitive than ever. Job seekers face intense pressure to stand out, while startups and companies struggle to find the right talent quickly. Traditional hiring processes are often slow, biased, or just plain ineffective. I’ve been on both sides, fumbling through interviews as a candidate and, later, as a founder, realizing how hard it is to evaluate candidates fairly without the right tools. Intervux solves this by leveraging AI to create a seamless, data-driven hiring experience. My Promise with Intervux Intervux isn’t just a tool, it’s a mission to empower job seekers and employers alike. For candidates, we’re here to give you the coaching I wish I had, helping you walk into interviews with confidence. Kyle just published one of the most insightful takes I've seen on the 'AI resume' problem. His point is critical: we're focusing on the wrong thing. The resume has always been a flawed proxy for skill. AI is just the latest thing to expose that weakness. This is the entire philosophy that drove us to build Ratio. We have to move beyond the resume and start assessing what people can actually do. A must-read for any hiring leader.

One thing I’m learning while building a tech platform: Community is not created by features. It’s created by culture. The culture we’re building around BIT Voices is simple: Black Builders share what they’re working on. Black Builders help each other win. Black Builders collaborate instead of compete. When that happens, something powerful emerges. Ideas turn into products. Products turn into companies. Companies turn into ownership. That’s the culture we want to cultivate with Black technologists and builders. Because innovation grows faster when builders grow together. #BlackExcellence #BlackInTech #BlackBuilders #BlackTechnologists #BuilsInPublic #TechCommunity #StartupCulture #BITVoices

I engineer the "invisible… • 646 followers
Spent some time reflecting on a few insightful days at FestForums® last week. Another stellar year facilitated by Laurie Kirby, Esq. and her dedicated team (special shoutout to Phoebe Choi). My biggest takeaway? The true "revolution" of our industry isn't just happening in the tech—it’s in the human-centric operations required to lead fluid, dynamic teams in high-pressure environments. The panels were excellent, but a sincere thank you to EJ Encalarde, Beth Pepper, and Stephen Odom for the masterclass in "Leading the Festival Revolution: Leadership & Team Building." Their insights on the evolution of our workspace were invaluable, especially when processed during those "in-between" moments and shore-side reflections that make this conference unique. Three perspectives I’m carrying into my work this week: 🧿 RESILIENCE AS INFRASTRUCTURE: Leadership in live events is about building teams capable of pivoting in real-time without losing their creative spark. 🧿 EMPATHETIC OPS: Efficiency is the goal, but empathy is the engine. The most successful festivals operate as human-centric ecosystems, not just logistics machines. 🧿 THE "DO-SAY" RATIO: Mission clarity is everything. When a team understands the WHY, the execution becomes second nature. It’s about practicing the culture you preach. Grateful for the new connections and the chance to recharge. Now, back to the build. #FestForums #CreativeOps #EventProduction #Leadership #LiveEvents #ArtistRelations

Capital One Is Hiring Big, Even When Others Are Letting Go — Here's Why It's Exciting for Us in Tech I’ve been noticing an interesting trend lately—while many companies are downsizing, Capital One is actively hiring engineers, especially in areas like data migration and integration. And after seeing how they completed the $35 billion acquisition of Discover, it all starts to make sense. This merger—only finalized in May 2025—positions Capital One as the largest credit card lender in the U.S. Business Insider AP News . With Discover now a part of the family, Capital One is tasked with a massive data migration and systems integration effort. That’s no small feat—and they’re bringing tech teams on board to make it happen. From what I’m seeing, they're hiring across roles like: Data Engineers & Migration Experts Full Stack Developers or SREs to help build scalable platforms People who understand cloud, APIs, and legacy-to-modern transitions If you’re someone with skills in data pipelines, cloud architectures, or integration work, this could be a very meaningful opportunity. What appeals to me about Capital One is how they’re expanding even in a cautious market. While many firms are laying off, this one is doubling down on building — a testament to the long-term vision behind the merger. Plus, they’ve always been known for investing in digital, customer-first innovation. Now add Discover’s infrastructure into the mix and you’ve got a whole new canvas for developers to work on. If you’re curious about such roles or exploring new career paths, I’d say—don’t sleep on this. It’s a unique moment when acquiring talent matters just as much as acquisitions themselves. Happy to chat with anyone wanting to explore this further. I brought the heartbeat of New York City to life with this real-time, interactive subway map. Built as a birthday gift for my fiancée, Sarajane Sullivan, the NYC Subway Visualization was designed to help her to feel connected to the city she loves from over a thousand miles away. The map uses nearly 500 LEDs to represent trains as they arrive and depart the stations, lighting up in the correct line colors. The result is a living, breathing visualization of the entire subway network. This project involved several fun technical challenges: ❗Challenge: Processing the MTA’s complex GTFS-RT Protobuf feed on a small device. ✅Solution: A Python server (Flask) handles the parsing, offloading the heavy work from the ESP32. ❗Challenge: Displaying updates instantly without network lag. ✅Solution: Implemented WebSockets for persistent, low-latency communication, a significant improvement over traditional HTTP polling. ❗Challenge: Physically wiring and then digitally mapping nearly 500 individual LEDs to the correct MTA station IDs. ✅Solution: Developed a python script to generate station_map.h file to act as a crucial link between the physical hardware layout and the software, ensuring data for a specific station lights up the correct LED every time. The project, inspired by a MoMA design, is fully open-source. You can find all the code, build instructions, and documentation on my GitHub. Big Shoutout to Ronny Herrera !!!!! I was lucky enough to have my first genuine growth discussion with the pixel God himself. What did I learn??? I reached out for some knowledge and knowledge is what I got!!! For deep tech founders who want change not just coin it’s important to understand the operations of the system in which you participate. 1. Unfortunately, not everybody wants to solve every problem. That one hurt…. But it’s also true! People who are change activators have kids and families and desires just like the rest of us. Just because you are changing the world doesn’t mean that everybody will drop their very structured life that they worked hard to build to dance for you. 2. Alignment isn’t just “oh we want the same thing”. It’s way deeper especially when you’re trying to align in deep tech or research. It’s more about connectivity. For example say I had a design for a system that could systematically enable World Peace…. Huge goal right! I would probably assume wow funding in the bag, I mean no one can say no to World Peace…. WRONG well more like not exactly, while everyone will publicly admit to wanting world peace the reason that you were denied that connection or that meeting link never clicked is because your approach was misaligned. Want to fix it???? Connect the broader goal from the top down and then connect it bottom up. How does World Peace solve a big organizations problem and how does the solving of the organizations problem lead to the solving of a demographics problem and vice versa…. That’s alignment!!!! And that’s how you get funding!!! 3. This one should be already known but it was nice to experience. Your network doesn’t work for you. If you’re tryna build something big… trust me, I understand wanting everyone you speak with to sign an LOI…. Trust me I know. But the ____ truth is that’s not how things are built. Sometimes just getting to chat with someone about your project and have them ask intelligent questions can be extremely valuable. So when you builders are reaching out be patient, honestly treat it like you would a date!!! That’s what you want right you want to be able call this person and tell them your move and them get excited and help move it forward. Well if sex is three dates then investment is probably around 500 dates so just relax. You’re smart and your idea is cool and impactful no need to be socially inappropriate!!! Obviously if you need marketing video content you now know where to go Ronny Herrera thanks again!!!!
