Let’s talk OSP design & permitting—specifically “automated” outputs. First, a clarification: I am not anti-AI or anti-technology. Used correctly, technology should augment a boots-on-the-ground approach—not replace it. That said, I keep seeing claims around “faster designs” and “fully permitted fiber routes via AI.” In practice, I have yet to see a fully automated drawing that is both accurate and doesn’t require significant human field verification. A few realities from the field: • The pricing I’ve seen from some “automated” design providers is 2–3x higher than what I can deliver using fully stateside teams. • Yes, my approach may be slower—but it has a far higher first-pass approval rate, which ultimately saves time and cost downstream. • I’ve yet to encounter a permitting authority that can meaningfully review and approve 100 miles of fiber at once without rubber-stamping. So what is the actual benefit of overwhelming agencies instead of submitting in logical, phased segments? • This doesn’t even account for material availability and construction sequencing—design velocity alone doesn’t build fiber. A real-world example: While doing field verification work in Scranton, PA, determining the number of dwelling units in a single structure was nearly impossible even while standing in front of it. “That house is either 2 units… or 7.” Public records were no help. If a human on site struggles to size fiber correctly, AI alone doesn’t stand a chance. Bottom line: I remain firmly team boots on the ground. Technology is a tool. Field intelligence is still the differentiator.

The FCC releases a monster 46 page NPRM around robocalls. It boils down to adding a number of potential new requirements around Stir/Shaken and branded calling, and removing a set of regulations around TCPA and call blocking. 30 days to comment, and a ton of stuff to comment on. T-Mobile and NATE just signed a major agreement that directly impacts tower contractors and crews on the ground. Highlights: * Site-specific and regional pricing replaces the one-size-fits-all matrix * 6% rate increase until new RFPs are finalized by end of year * "Scope to Quote" tool launches by Sept 1 to define job-specific SOWs * 30-day pay terms with 50% upfront billing at job start * Relief from Avetta, Ariba, and PaymodeX fees for small businesses * Crackdown on 1099/undocumented labor—reporting and enforcement tools coming * Limits on tiered subs and a move away from "Super GC" and turf vendor models These changes didn’t come easy—NATE pushed hard to get them. Florida is now entering the largest broadband construction cycle in its history under BEAD and Middle Mile programs.
