Reading about New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s push for solar, storage, and virtual power plants got me thinking about the bigger picture. Transmission expansion is likely constrained for years. In the meantime, VPPs and distributed resources will be essential to support load growth across industry, data centers, and households. For states like Wisconsin that import much of their energy and lack in-state fossil resources, local renewables (in many forms) start to look less like a climate strategy and more like a reliability and energy security one.
