Save “Coverage” for Slack PR pros: The word coverage makes sense in internal conversations for tracking metrics, reporting to clients, etc. But when it’s said to journalists, it can feel like the article itself (and our hard work) doesn’t matter, just the mention. A brand mention is nice, of course, but the story (craft, context, narrative) is what really sticks and weaves the brand into people’s minds in a meaningful way. "ABM didn't work for us" is what I've heard all too often the last few years of being a consultant. In my experience the biggest reasons why ABM didn't work is two-fold: either an expensive ABM platform, especially 6sense, was purchased prematurely and/or the GTM team was unclear of their roles in the account-based motion and marketing teams only understood this motion conceptually and unable to drive business transformation. I wrote this article for MarTech with specific account-based GTM "Pod Team" instructions of how to tangibly be one GTM revenue team with joint goals and accountability to each other. A quick reminder for marketers: not everything you write is messaging. We often blend three things that are actually quite different — and when we get them mixed up, performance suffers. I'm talking about (1) Lures (you may call it hooks?). (2) Messaging. (3) CTAs. Each plays a different role in how we attract, engage, and convert. Lures are emotional hooks. They’re meant to stop the scroll, spark curiosity, or hit a nerve. They don’t explain your product — they make people want to know more. Kind of like the opening scene in a movie or show. They pull you in. (Andor Season 2 anyone?) Some of the best lure categories we’ve used at Allego: --Something new – “AI simulator just dropped. No scripts. Just real practice.” --A pain – “You coach when you can. Which is never.” --A success – “Cut onboarding from 90 days to 1 week? Here's how.” --A relatable truth – “Your reps can’t close from a classroom.” --Something funny – “Don’t go chasing PowerPoints” Messaging comes after the lure. It’s where you explain who you are, what you offer, and how it helps. It’s the meat. CTAs are the bridge. “Get the guide.” “See it live.” “Book a demo.” Or whatever else you want your audience to do. The magic happens when all three are working together — not blended into one block of text.

Fantastic, practical, battle-tested advice on #PursuitMarketing and #ABM by one of the best in the business. I had the luck and privilege of working with Dorothea and watched her build our function from my first hire (herself) to a world-class "small army" of about 25 ABMers who helped us win plenty of business (and awards) at DXC. We’re doing it again at Inovalon using the same principles, albeit with a slightly smaller team. If you’re not sure what to say on LinkedIn (or where to even begin) this might help. In a recent conversation with Christine Orchard on Marketers Do Coffee, we talked about how I approach storytelling for founders and teams. But honestly, this applies to anyone trying to show up more online. For example: → Why do you do what you do? → What part of your work actually lights you up? → How is it helping people? → What’s one great thing that happened last week and why? These questions are simple, but they work. You don’t need a script or a 10-slide deck. You just need a starting point. And the great thing about social? If you don’t love what you post—people usually forget it pretty quickly anyway. So really, it’s about starting where you are, as you are. Oden has a positioning doc feature that's been quietly saving me hours on competitive audits. Let me tell you why it matters. The hardest part of a website revamp or messaging refresh isn't the writing. It's everything that has to happen before you write a single word. If you're a consultant juggling multiple clients, or a founding PMM who's basically a team of one - you know this. The "quick competitive check" somehow swallows your entire afternoon. Six tabs open, a messy notes doc, and you still can't tell where your positioning actually has room to breathe. The problem isn't effort. Manual audits are just unstructured by nature - every homepage gets read differently depending on your headspace and deadline pressure. You end up with a collection of vibes, not a usable baseline. Oden's positioning doc fixes exactly this. It audits competitor homepages through a consistent lens - same questions every time. Real ICP based on actual language. Differentiation type. Category claim. Where they're exposed. The consistency is what makes it a starting point you can actually work from. For consultants: a structured competitive baseline ready before your first client call. For founding PMMs: clarity on where the whitespace is before you touch your own homepage. My DSR journey continues. Last week I realized engagement data was a key pillar. This week, I'm asking: which metrics actually matter? Is it about views? Downloads? Time on page? My initial thought is it's about the pattern. A buyer spending 10 minutes on the pricing page tells a different story than one who downloads a case study. There is often one section in a content strategy plan that is overlooked: The Not section. This is where you define what you're not going to do: 🙅‍♂️ The audience that you're not targeting 🙅 The audience pain points that you're not discussing because there is no alignment with your product messaging 🙅‍♀️ The content formats that you're not producing ⛔ The KPIs that you're not measuring 🚫 The channels that you're not going to be on You can try to be all the things to everyone, but you'll end up with a content strategy that is scattered, unfocused, and too big.
